Suffer the little children – because the cell operators don’t care

Such a programme could quite conceivably be seen as part of a company’s corporate social responsibility, and when one considers the lives that could be saved, it seems that the ‘greater good’ really should win out here.

Shocking that all 3 cellular networks have ignored requests to have this implemented in SA :mad:.

I think we can safely assume that kidnappers & paedophiles etc would not like to see such a system implemented in SA, the question is: why are Vodacom & MTN & CellC passively aligning themselves with the interests of kidnappers & paedophiles etc...?

The first network operator to implement this system in SA, for free, will score major points with parents, i.e. customers.

My guess is that this is a normal RSA corportae thing, where the only idea of service is that of servicing the shareholders profits at the cost of clients and staff alike ...

I wonder "WHY" this silence from the big 3? It can not be that they fear loss of money, there must be some other reason??????? What is that reason:confused:

Crime is such a massive part of the South African economy that it would leave millions out of a "job" if it would dissappear through some miracle!!. Not to mention the drop in VAT generated for the Gov. This may very well be the reason, or part of the reason gov. is so slow to acknowlegde/take action on, crime.:eek:

Still I believe there must be a other reason why the big 3 are quiet, for R19 bil (do not quote) annual profit for Vodacom how can they suffer profit for such a scheme? Not responding to such schemes is a crime in it self:rolleyes:

They make money from charities, if they start encouraging community involvement and giving back, they will lose out big bucks...
 
Just a thought.... and I DON'T condone the networks not doing something to help with this, they do have the ability whether it is mms or any other form of communication.

But, in their defense - as far as I know, "spam" sms and mms are not allowed
in SA (this is to prevent receiving uwanted advertising on your phone the whole day) and when it comes to MMS, you also pay to retrieve one.

We have a very high incidence of missing kids in SA, so imagine receiving 20-30 MMS's a day with photos of missing kids? People would become immune to them, and delete without even downloading.

That said, there must be some creative way "they" can come to the party to help these kids get found. They have the key, and the customer base. They just need the right method?
 
It's so easy to attack people or companies for not "fighting crime", without thinking about the issues at hand.

Call me a dick, but I really don't want to receive dozens of messages about missing kids any more than I want to receive messages advertising viagra or Russian brides. I'd probably just buy a cheap phone which couldn't receive MMS, since the few ones I currently receive are all rubbish anyway.

Besides, it's not like anyone actually knows it would help. They're attacking private companies for not being altruistic (like a private company has *ever* been altruistic), when they have no idea whether the scheme would work at all.

Recall how familiar Madeleine McCann’s face is, and you know right away that if you spotted her, you would know it was her instantly.

No, actually I wouldn't. I don't know what she looks like from watching the news, and I wouldn't have any better idea if you sent me cellphone spam - I assure you.

This is clearly a poorly thought out, hair-brained scheme. People look past that, though, because it's about the grand crusade of 'fighting crime', and there's a nice easy corporate target for people to blame for not being as enthusiastic about the crusade as much as they are.

If you want to fight crime, buy a gun and learn how to use it. Join a policing forum. Heck, join the police themselves... Lobby politicians. Vote out politicians who fail to address crime problems. Spend your own goddamn money, and berate politicians for spending your own goddamn money on things you aren't interested in. Take some personal responsibility, and stop blaming others.

Don't blame cellphone operators for taking care of their bottom line. Not only would they have to pay for the network traffic, since I doubt Rodney Weidemann would fit the bill, but they'd be chasing away customers who really don't want to be spammed - even if the spam is "for a good cause" - and this is most people, sorry to say it.

Strange, my mms's come straight to my phone but then again maybe it connects automatically to dl the content :confused:

Most phones do - connect automatically that is - part of the mms settings. But if you watch it download, you can see it connecting to the internet. Good test is on prepaid, you cannot receive an mms if you have no airtime...:rolleyes:

Yes, you require a working data connection to receive an MMS (mine downloads automatically too), but it does not use the internet connection, but the MMS data connection, which AFAIK is free for receiving an MMS. You will only be charged when sending an MMS through that MMS data connection.

Edit: The MMS data connection uses the 'mms.vodacom.net' APN and not the 'internet' APN used by your standard internet connection.

I'm sure if they cared enough to institute a potentially life saving community service they could wave the fee.

The question is do they care enough?
 
^^ well did you all see the article about how cell operators don't even care about children in SA??! So I doubt they care about their customers either :sick: save a few who are not in any major managerial positions
 
I would so stop using my Vodacom contract if I knew it would send a message to Vodacom... we should all do something, you know.

When a TV series gets cancelled in USA, people for example (Jericho) sent 1000's upon 1000's of peanuts to the TV shows demanding something and look, Jericho is coming back for season 2!

Now why can't we all do something like this but for something like this, DEMAND that our cellular providers get off their fat asses and do something useful for once!

WHY THE HELL NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
