New Telkom competitor promises great voice and ADSL savings

Holdsworth pointed out that the company is also rolling out its own copper infrastructure and DSLAM’s in gated villages to bring residents the benefits of ADSL.

What about NON-gated villages?

ECN Telecoms ... rollout rollout!

Dang .. only some places will get this, cos they have to lay cable.
Now .. where did that MOC put the agreement on LLU?
Dang .. she forgot all about it dirrent she.

Do2 will give you 4GBs at 384 kbps for R372 all inclusive. That's still cheaper per GB than their R320 for 3GB...

And they didn't mention anything about uncapped local???

Still too much!

ECN’s Surf 1 Internet Plan – which offers a downlink speed of 384 Kbps and a 3 GB usage allowance – is priced at R 326.05 per month.

Thats all good and all... but what about local usage IT MUST BE UNCAPPED! 3GB's is still pretty min IMO.

Oh BTW still way too much for only 384k

It also depends if its unshaped. Or if its a complete package, ie no line rental. Then 1Mbps 10Gb works out to R51 a gig. Not bad. Currently 10Gb unshaped will cost you R1199. Could be worth looking into. Will have to look a little closer but to take talk and adsl costs R1000+ .

Speed isn't really an issue for me, I can wait 3 days for a download to complete, I just want as big a cap as possible or even (crazy me) uncapped. Even at 48 KB/s (384 kbps) you can download 4 GBs per day, which is more than their cap.

The new telecoms player said that they have been working very hard behind the scenes to get everything in place to launch their commercial offerings, and did not want to make any noise before they had a true offering on the table.
Unlike those other guys who are all talk and no product. Kudos.

Except that they also have no product.

Remember GTS, 10GB cap at R250 or something that they advertised way back in the day? Still no show from them either.

Can anyone actually call ECN and get this service installed?

You can indeed order their voice service, but with their ADSL offering I think you need to be in an area which they cover. This is however understandable as they do not have a license to go beyond what they are currently doing...

Well until we can get a naked DSL line (DSL excl voice) from Telkom I don't think anyone with ADSL and voice can change to these guys.

But that's exactly my point!

I can offer everyone in my flat block uncapped wireless internet at R300 per month, but that doesn't qualify as a legitimate product since only an EXTREMELY small amount of people can actually sign up for it.

4 sure, these guys still have to use telkom for last mile at least. As for the interconnect stuff, I'm suspicious...the interconnect fees are far too high to ever be that competitive...

so this boils down to a voip service, not true cometition at all? or am i missing something?
