Nepad, Eassy partnership ends in divorce

The DoC is control crazy...thinking of blocking EASSy and SEACOM to land in SA is disastrous!
 
It looks like they are trying to avoid Telkom's story repeating itself again.
 
That may be true Arni, but they do it by repeating exactly what they have done with Telkom: Not allowing true competition! Why not allow all cable systems to land in SA? The more the better…competition will soon sort out the pricing issue which is the only real reason why open access is perceived to be important after all.
 
People keep shooting me down when I suggest that the problem is ideological, that the ANC is still firmly rooted in socialist thinking. But the fact is that the ANC does not trust the markets to deliver, especially to the poor, and this is manifested in its actions. The sooner we get rid of the old guard in government, the people who were schooled in discredited Marxist thinking, the sooner we can get on with the job of boosting economic growth to 8%-10% through aggressive privatisation and liberalisation.

wtf are businesses that actually *want* to supply bandwidth supposed to think? They cannot operate with such uncertainty. this is just beyond stoopid.

To think that these people are in control of SA. This is all about control of SA communication with the rest of the world. This saga just shows once again why this continent is in the state it is in.
 
Govt just trying to protect Telkom & Infraco? Or are they really that daft?
 
remember the new gvt (Zuma led) is all about gvt control of key industries. This ties in nicely with their plans.

Instead of someone being fired regarding the EASSY debacle Shope-Mafole starts sulking saying “you aint gonna be my friend anymore after all our sleepovers and I will get 2 new friends. So Wheh. Henry Chasia is my husband, he’s going to moer you.“

I don't think people realize how many years of planning and strategy was put into EASSY by our government and the DoC. NEPAD is Mbeki's baby and he should feel like a **** right now and deservedly so. Probably explains all his promises of new cables. Something they should have started years ago. Oh well, let's start from scratch again.

Maybe this could be a good thing. Poison Ivy’s general Shope-Mafole could awaken the queen of donuts and cake from her winter slumber just in time for Poison Ivy to declare SAT3 an essential facility. Then again she will probably just make some more promises and useless policy directives.

This is a perfect illustration of exactly how Mbeki's lack of involvement is damaging the country. He is out of touch with the pulse of the nation, and allows incompetent socialist wannabes to run the country's most important departments into the ground. I agree with mcleodd in that privatisation is the key to sustained economic growth. NEPAD is almost Mbeki's stillborn - it will likely not survive his own retirement.
 
Why am I not surprised at all. Old story, the government is just living up to the expected standards.

I am sure govt wont be able to block any cable from being connected to SA - AFAIK Neotel and Telkom has international connection as part of their licences and there is probably no clause stating from which cable / company they have to get this international connection. Wont surprise me if govt tries, and these co's take the court route if necessary. Need to spend all their money - may as well do it on lawyers fees and not infrastructure development :)

Both SEACOM and EASSy simply have to get into agreement with these to get access to SA, preferably before govt takes over landing rights (i.e. it is then part of the package).
 
Government, through InfraCo, will provide funding for the west coast projects. But the hope, Molefe says, is that some funding will come from telecom operators in SA. However, the state’s equity in InfraCo will not be diluted under any circumstances.

TelecomsCompetition-101: don't try to mismanage telecoms liberalisation, don't try to manage what should be left to competing market forces to sort out amongst themselves, don't reject infrastructural investment bcos it isn't going to be monopolised by the DoC, allow as many submarine cables to be lain as possible - a multitude of competing submarine cables and bandwidth means considerably lower international bandwidth costs.

Shope-Mafole is a certifiable idiot IMO, but that in no way decreases my levels of disrespect for the other incompetent narcoleptics: Ivy, 6..8 weeks Roy, and we will always have Paris - sadly :mad:.

Next time Shope-Mafole goes away on a business-holiday, and tries to re-enter SA, please traffic controllers, don't allow her plane to land in SA...

The cables would be built by South Africa but would be connected to Nepad member countries, which would enjoy free access to it.
