Heck of a speed boost after update..

Hey all,

I just updated from Fedora Core 6 to Fedora Core 7, this took me from kernel 2.6.18 to 2.6.21...

And wow it's made an enormous difference with my Huawei E220!
Apart from no longer mounting it as a disk.. the speed increase is incredible..

I just got 1304Kbps on speedtest.net (MTN) which is basically double what I've ever gotten before!! :D My max up till now was around 650Kbps..


So unless MTN did something to the local tower that coincided exactly with my updating, I must presume the difference comes from the new/updated driver...

Anyway, just thought I'd post this in case there's anyone left on sub 2.20 kernels.. The update is well worth it.. ;)

Long time :)

Yip - that would - the 2.6.21 kernel has a HUGE change towards mobile "things" - they even include a Blackberry charger (well, just usb pumped up etc etc etc). Shows you which way we heading ! :D

Yea, I noticed that the "usbserial" module is now just one in the queue.. seems to use a module called "option" now. (no doubt named for the Option datacard brand).

Anyway, I'm glad things are jacking up.. I never ever suspected that my speed could improve with better drivers.. I had already applied the patch to usbserial on my previous kernel, which increased my max speed from about 500Kbps to around 650Kbps.. And then I just always thought that that was the max I could possibly get with my signal level and all..

And I only get "12,99" with AT+CSQ which I think is about half strength..
I can only imagine how it would fly with a full strength signal! :D
 
Weird, i updated my FC6 install to the 2.6.21 kernel but my datacard still runs at the same speed.
I would blame signal but i have a tower 100 metres away from me.
Looks like im going to have to ditch the FC6 install and try FC7

It's quite a worthwhile update anyway.. ;)

Another improvement I've discovered in the meantime is that I can suspend my system to RAM and when I "wake" it up again the connection is still active and continues working as normal.. On FC6 if I was connected when my system suspended, not only would the connection would be lost, but the dongle had to be completely re initialised...


As for the speed increase, practically speaking I don't normally get speeds like 1300Kbps.. tends to sit around 600-1000kbps ... except on downloads then it does actually peak pretty high at times.. :)
