Is it possible to use my vodaphone e220 working on the cellc network?

I put the phone in with a cell c sim, it installed the software, I first tried to connect to the vodacom network, it would not let me, so i shut down the vodafone software and setup a dial up connection using the modem as the modem device (i am able to query the modem)

I leave the u/p fields blank in the connection and add this string in the advanced options of the modem:

at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet"

and I try dial into this number:

*99***1#

The modem seems to dial, and it looks like its 'authenticates', then it gets to the bit where it says "registering computer on the network" and then the connection bails and I get an Error 619, "The port was disconnected."

Any ideas?
 
Are you trying to connect to the Vodacom 3G network? Because you can't access 3G with a Cell C sim, only GPRS/EDGE. Try using the GPRS only profile and see if that helps. Also have you tested the Cell C sim in a phone or something to make sure its been activated for internet. If its Virgin Mobile rather than Cell C itself the apn'll be vdata btw.

If I search for available networks with the vodafone software should it pick up a cellc network or does cellc piggy back gprs on vodacom? (new to this technology, so not sure how it works)

Cell C has both their own network and also allow roaming on Vodacom. As long as you're in a decent sized place you should be able to pick up Cell C itself and get EDGE.

Only the very first batch of Vodafone branded and Vodacom issued Huawei E620 Data Cards were ever network locked, the Vodacom issued Huawei E220 USB modem was never network locked.

One thing to avoid with the E220, is an MTN 64k SIM card, I don't know if the same issue exists with CellC SIM cards, another potential issue, is whether the APN for CellC is also internet.

Probably best to have this thread in the CellC forum...

okay thanks, will give it a try tomorrow, move it to which ever part of the forum you think this might be best in thanks IC.
