On Saturday, news broke out that the next revision of the DX API from MS, DirectX 10.1, will render the current crop of DirectX 10 cards "obsolete."

That was a load of BS it seems (thank God).

Microsoft's Sam Glassenberg told Next-Gen in a phone interview, "DX10.1 fully supports DX10 hardware. No hardware support is being removed....It's strictly a superset. It's basically an update to DX10 that extends the hardware functionality slightly."

Is it just me or does he contradict himself?

First he says:

There will be new features [with DX10.1], and those features may be exposed on new hardware

So, it won't fully support the newer features being added with DX10.1?

Fan-freakin-tastic.

So basically its backward compatible, and you'll have to get a new GFX card if you want to make use of the new DX10.1 features. Can't wait for the DX10.2 cards to arrive.

There's nothing confusing here...

DX10.1 much like DX9.0c over DX9.0a/b, DX8.1 over DX8.0, DX7.0a over DX7.0... You still install the update but you can only use features your gfx card supports.

Where's the confusion here?

This is just stupid, an update for DX 10 before we even have a handful of "old" DX10 games that actually look next gen, that actually run better, that do half of what was promised. Sheesh....

No confusion!

I was thinking the same thing :)

I would think with the new DX10.1 "newer cards" that come out should support DX10.1 I am guesing DX10.1 will just increase the performance of DX10 and some games where having realy bad performace Isues, like Call of Jaurez.

Not really. There's nothing wrong with the API, 10.1 makes what was optional compulsory like for instance half precision is gone for good and only FP32 is left. Current DX10 cards already do full Precision and some like GF8 don't have option for half anyway...

Where COJ is concerned its patched to DX10 not natively DX10 so its not a representative of the API at all.
