hi guys, just started an internet cafe with 8 standard desktops, but have a lot of requests for gaming pc's. can i get about 3 suggestions for a top of range pc to play all the latest games. no price limit. i got a fat loan from bank. thanx.

No need for senseless overkill and paying a premium for the best. But think along these lines:
- Core 2 Duo E6850 (3GHz)
- 2 x 1GB DDR800s
- 8800GTS 640MB
- The motherboard doesnt have to be a expensive overclocker, just decent 965
- 320GB harddrive
- DVD writer
- Nice keyboard with gaming mouse with nice gaming mousepads
- 22" LCD
- A Soundblaster soundcard with nice earphones (with mic)
I think it will be around R15 000.

Remember your connection also needs to be top notch if you are going to have people playing games online. Stable low latency comes at a price... a heavy price at that.

Not sure what specs those pc's are. But If they are standard single core 3ghz or maybe AMD 3500+ or better. Simply add a 3dcard to each system.
U can play games still on DirectX9 3dcards, not many games are out that requires DX10 as of yet. I recommend 8600GTS (they are not very pricy, and supports DX10 for future games)
DX10 8800GTX or 8800GT is for uber-gamers.

- any mid-range Intel Core2Duo (such as the E6600), or an AMD AM2 6000+, will be perfect. That implies going either for a motherboard supporting the relevant Intel or AMD chips
- get at least 2x1Gb DDR2-800 RAM. Any less will result in pagefile swapping when playing demanding games.
- on the graphics side, expect to spend between R2,500 - R3,500. An 8600GTS will do for now, but doesn't justify the price, compared to the excellent value of the 320Mb 8800GTS for R500 more. The 8800GTX is a performance item, but again may be replaced soon with talks of DX10.1 not being supported by the 1st-gen DX10 cards. I'd vote for the 320Mb 8800GTS any day.
- If you do go for LCD's, there are 19" models which are good value at roughly R2,000. Just ensure that they have 4ms or lower reponse-times and also have a brightness rating of 300 or more, as well as contrast of 700:1 or more. Those 3 factors will ensure that the visuals are clear and responsive
Considering that mice and keyboards are hammered by spoilt gamer-kiddies, I would suggest getting the MS Comfort-curve keyboard and optical mouse combination in the Ergonomic value pack. You could splurge on laser mice, or high-end gamers mice, but the replacement-cost will hurt.

Have you considered offering 360's in your gaming area, as well as PC's - Cheaper, simpler, and less components to worry about.
Personally I think those rigs are overkill for a "public" PC, I'd say a low end Core 2 / midrange athlon X2 duo with an 8600GTS for a 19" Widescreen would be ample. Do the lot for around 8k a pop, the you can deploy twice as many for twice the income instead of just building spec to suit a fanboys wet dreams.

I never through of an internet cafe having consoles but Doobiwan has a point really...
Pick up 4 consoles and some games for R15k.... you might get a better return on your money...

Can you do a quick ping to a off shore gaming server ?
I think the only downside could be Packet loss. It doesn't lag but the screen freezes every now and again trying to retrieve lost packets.
Do a ping and see if gou get any packet loss

unfortunately I dont think it will be OK, the latency will be VERY high and that means a lot of moaning gamers.

Yup, I'm afraid satellite won't cut it for 'twitch' gaming, latency is around 800ms. It might be useable for something like WoW.
May I suggest you get a dedicated SAIX ADSL line for gaming? You can charge a premium for it (Hot PC's and hot connection)

Xbox's are an interesting idea, but NEVER before PC's or as a replacement 
Napalms idea is fine but it depends on those PC specs and how many extra PC's you need for the gaming.
Rather furture proof a little bit and get a 8800GTS 320MB, perfect card atm. Why bother with a 320GB HDD btw, you won't be storing anything except a few games on these PC's. And you don't need to spend too much on the CPU, an E6750 or lower would do fine.
For the line, most people will be gaming locally for the intensive (network wise) FPS games. So the wireless con suffers even more, especially when split between a few computers. One 512kb line could run a few PC's for online gaming, and the cap usage isn't that high (use a local only account, it will save you loads). I don't think the line would be maxed with 512 before the latency became a bigger problem, so 4mb might be useless. Possibly rather 2X512kb...

If you just bought some standard rigs then maybe you can postpone the expensive Gaming -PC by upgrading one or two of the existing PC a bit as suggested above. When those upgraded PCs then get outdated then you can shell out those big bucks. Unless you bought the cheapest of the cheap, those standard PC can't be that useless for gaming after more RAM+3D Card.
