Telkom just offered me WiMax

Hi All

I just got my adsl application I made yesterday turned down and was offered WiMax instead. Seems to be a better deal anyhoo I don't have a land line. My concern is over the latency I'm on iBust at the moment and thats the real killer with online games.

Can anyone post pics of the equipment the install? do you just get offered a rj45?

I have a 4Mbps ADSL and a 512kbps WiMAX connection from Telkom and in all honesty you would find it really difficult to distinguish between the two. Obviously there is a big difference in speed between the 4M and 512K, but the latency with WiMAX is very much similar to ADSL.

For WiMax what exeactly do they install and how do you connect to it ?
 
Is wimax only available to users that cant get an adsl line and is whats the cost- - the same as the normal dsl rental or more
 
I just phoned Telkom with the aim of getting WiMax. And no joy... I've been waiting for 2 months now for them to install additional adsl ports in my area, only to be told today that maybe, just maybe, they'll be in by 31 December!
So I asked about WiMax. Sorry, no can do... Only if ADSL is not available to you can you apply for a WiMax connection. Even though ADSL is not available to me for the rest of the year, and even next year is questionable at this rate, but because my neighbour has asdl, thus the area is enabled, I've been denied WiMax...

Well, needless to say, I've just cancelled my entire order for a Telkom line. And ADSL line. And installation of the whole lot. Their snotty attitude has just lost them another customer.

Got much more joy from a local wireless provider - They'll assess the premisis Monday or Tuesday (depending on when I can get time off work to be there), and if the signal's good, they'll install whenever I have the time :D

I'm assuming you are not going with Wimax?
I would advise giving Wimax a chance. Reason being that I too had a problem not getting adsl and I looked at Iburst and Sentech. Let me just say that both of those options suck. Iburst is way too expensive. I know that Telkom is a pain to deal with however I'm glad I waited for Wimax. It's very similiar to ADSL in terms of the quality and price etc.

It's a bit hard to get Wimax when telkom refuses to supply it, don't you think?

I'm also in one of those areas where they only plan on upgrading the DSL infrastructure in December so I asked for WiMax, threw my toys and got it installed in under 2 weeks ... Well worth it as I'm getting a confirmed 512 Kbps ....

Kick and scream - its all that works !!

If your neighbor has ADSL, why not ask him to install a wireless router with PPPOE Relay enabled so you can log on and use your own ISP via his ADSL line.

It wont cost him anything, and he can make use of the router at the same time. If he hardly downloads, then you wont even notice if he is on the internet at the same time.
