Upgrade time. Suggestions?

Basically I am looking to upgrade from my current board and then also get new RAM.

I am looking at the Intel Dragontail Peak P35 motherboard as it is within my price range and seems to be what I need (I am especially keen on the 1333Mhz FSB).

I currently have the Core 2 Duo E6300 which I intend to overclock once I have my new board and RAM (2gb DDR2-800).

My question is whether that board is worth it, as I am not exactly all that familiar with Intel's new "Bearlake" chipset...

Any thoughts?
 
If you intend to overclock, go for an Asus or Gigabyte motherboard.
I have a Gigabyte DQ6
E6420 overclocked to 3.2Ghz stock voltage, watercooled.
 
Why does it seem like the world is mum on the Dragon Tail mobo? South Africa actually seems to be the only place in the world featured on Google with info on it?

And no I did NOT search South Africa Only. ;)
 
Also, in terms of gfx cards, I have around R2500 to spend on a graphics card and I am currently looking at the XFX Ge-Force 8600GTS XXX Edition 256mb PCI-E

Does anyone have any hands-on experience with this card? Is it worth it?

Not sure about the 8600 XXX but I sold an 8800Ultra XXX and had huge problems with it ... then we swopped it and had even worse problems with the new one. XFX is a good brand but has a bad reputation for their factory overclocked cards

A nice card is the Asus 8600GT OC Gear ...which comes with a overclock device with LCD display to plug in a CD-ROM bay for that added umph when you need it. According to the add ... a standard 8600GT 3DMark06 score is 4185 and this thing allows you to boost it to 5493 ... obviously processor, memory and system dependant.

Its not badly priced either. I can sell one to you for R1850. Another option would be to wait because we are soon getting 8600GTS's to replace the 8800 which is nearly EOL.

If you are interested in the Asus 8600GT, let me know ... either through PM or website ... or even if you just want more info.

By the way ... how much have you been quoted for this card?
 
If you were going for a 8600GTS XXX, then spending the few hundred more on a 8800GTS is really the way to go.

Just to pimp diditaladdiction a bit more than the owner, they do have a 8800GTS for juuust under R3000, which is great. :)

Just to emphasise, it's IS NOT worth spending R2500 on a 8600GTS when you're so close to a 8800GTS.

Hey ... thanks for the pimping :o

I actually don't sell that card anymore ... I had the card on back order for a customer, and told the supplier and they said fine ... when it came time to buy though ... they said they aren't getting anymore and its EOL ... bastards.

I can however get you a Foxconn 8800GTS for R2999 or an XFX 8800GTS for R3050 ... now I'm really pimping ... lol :cool:

Hi.

Like I said in the previous post ... I can get you the XFX for R3050. I can get you the Asus for R3150. Also, he has made a mistake in his model number for the Asus, it should be EN8800GTS/HDCP/320M not 640M.

Hey, I also looked at that Intel board, but after some research decided to go for the Asus P5K as I want to overclock in the future, I got a E6750 (2.66ghz core2duo 1333fsb). According to most of the overclocking sites and forums the intel boards are difficult to overclock, where the asus ones seem to give a very high and stable overclock. Some people are pushing the E6750 over 4GHZ on a vanilla P5K board. I also decided to bite the bullet and took a 8800GTS 320mb card, I am super impressed with it. As for the XXX edition cards, you might as well go for a standard card and then overclock it yourself (saves you some cash)!
 
@Meisteral: I got the vanilla P5K, so no WiFi etc, couldn't justify the price increase for stuff I can add (for less $$$) at a later stage when and IF i need them. I am running DDR2-800 Low Latency RAM, read a lot of reviews comparing "Low Latency vs Higher Speed" RAM and then made my choice.
 
I've got a Core Duo E6300 at the moment which I intend to keep and then overclock using a Zalman cooler. Want to try get up to 3.0ghz per core...
 
You're prob gonna waste your time get DDR 1066 memory, it will prob be downclocked to DDR800 anyway.
