Here's the thing, I've got some budget LG laptop (acquired through one of those "free" laptop PC courses). According to the branding on the laptop and on the box in which it came, it is an LG. The model name is LS7 and the config is LS75. On the front of the laptop, it tells me it is the "LS75 Express".

I am running Kubuntu and need to know what sound card is in this demonspawn so I can actually have sound to drown out the godawful RnB crap they play at work. I have asked Google on many an occasion, and I have scoured the LG website, yet according to my findings it appears that I own a laptop that doesn't actually exist.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to finding out what sound card this beast has in it? Any help would be much appreciated.
 
I'm dual booting with windows, but I work in Kubuntu as I'm in a Linux Company and don't want to seem sacrilegious.
 
Boot into windows and check the system info to identify the sound card (assuming that it works in Windows ;)).

Device Manager --> Sound, Video and Game controllers--> etc.
 
in linux you can issue a lspci command in a terminal window to see which sound card it is. if lspci is not installed, the package is called pciutils

on windows, you can use SIW.
 
Okay I have discovered that my sound card is the C-Media CMI8990 L. However, this is one of the few C-Media cards that doesn't have linux drivers :( nor is it supported by alsa.

Guess no sound for me :(

Funnily enough I've managed to get it working. I just had to do a lspci and manually add the device location to the sound set up. I'm now using ALSA, although I can only use headphones as it won't play out the main laptop speakers, which is fine with me, at least now I can drown out that filthy RnB crap with the likes of Rhapsody and Epica.

Win.

Epica.. are Epic, seriously I love them lately. :D Too bad I can't say the same about Rhapsody of Fire..

Well done on putting the tenth bullet into 50c.
