Well i bought PCformat, for the first time.

Not much in it, is there. Full of ads. Probably more of a gamers mag, should actaully be renamed.

Wont buy it again, rather stick to SAcomputer mag.

I have lots and lots SA computer magazines dating back to 2001, but since their price increase and layout change in beginning 2006 (or was it late 2005) I have bought only 2. I sometime sbuy PC Format if there is something I want on the disk, but they always so far behind with hardware VS websites.

Nowdays I buy Computer Active, its cheap and the disk normally has nice programs...

It is a PC gaming mag. I always love the covers :)

Ya, SA computer mag has always be a pretty good mag. I remember on the sa computer mag forum (dr.boot), they asked the users (and me - lol) whether or not the mag should introduce a disc, i said no, and if i remember the poll came out for the majority of No's. But , as we see it now comes with a disc and obviously costs more to buy the mag.

lol at Freak_c for liking the cover page. Thats the major selling point for the mag.

PC Format - I received it free at a Lan , and they had this awesome babe advertising C&C3 , she was in a military styled bathing suit. Blonde hair , crisp clear blue eyes , a pert nose .. in short to die for. I really like looking at this poster whenever I go visit my bud.

Welcome to the enlightened side! PCF stopped being a good mag years ago! The downward slide began when they employed a female editor! She basically took a decent PC leisure mag and turned into nothing more than glorified toilet paper! She knew bugger all about IT and computers despite all her claims!

Currently the articles are garbage (the ones that aren't recycled from the UK ver), the editor and staff are a bunch of morons and the magazine offers no real value anymore!

The use of females on the cover is a lame attempt to move copies off the shelves which people started to see through years ago! I'm pretty glad I stopped buying that trashy mag!!

Still got some from '98 with the old game covers

Also some SA computer mags from '98 as well :D

i like pc format nothing wrong with it if you ask me

women sell end of story

put a hot chick on any magazine and it'll sell, why would ppl want to put computer chips on the front page of a magzine read by 90% male

Hot chicks FTW i say

they should add a couple of upskirts shots, then you would see it fly off the shelves

Welcome to the world of photoshop ;)

I haven't bought a PCF in ages ... sometimes when I go to Corex they have them there so I take one for free ... the last one didn't have the CD though ... :( ... I only read the hardware test and maybe 1 or 2 articles ... the rest of the mag hurts my eyes ... no really ... you know when you're eyes get sore from reading boring stuff.

I have to give them a thumbs up for Junes issue though ... the cover disc was awesome ... it had 200 free games, some of which I would never have discovered.
Some of them made me feel like a small kid again.
And they have this game called Abstractica 2 on it ... its a really awesome but hard mind game ... its all these random things and you must guess the answer.
I'm up to level 62, and stuck ... I don't wanna skip the question ... it just doesn't feel right to skip questions.

An example of a puzzle is:

"The answer is very easy:"

'Picture of a banana'

I typed banana as my answer, I was wrong ... turns out the answer was "very easy" :P ... but thats one of the simpler ones.

If anyone has an idea what this may be ... please tell me:

---( : : : )( : : :)---

The clue for this question was "Don't make this too hard for yourself"
Also, there shouldn't be any spaces ... just added them so it doesn't turn this post into smiley faces.
I've tried converting them to ascii numbers and adding them ... but that didn't work ... any help please.
I suggest you guys download the game for free ... its really cool.

i read PcFormat.. Nag... T3 .... Mens Health... FHM.. Zoo.. :) every month for long now.. well Pcformat since 1998... Nag since like 200 i think..

I read SA computer.. and it seems very Business orientated... so only read like 3... The best"Hardcore mag" ive read on computers is Maximum Pc from America.. but its R99 now.. so stopped reading it :)

But ya.. Pc and Nag are pretty decent :P

No, Photoshop sells

You guys must be really gullible to buy a mag for a pic ;)

When I moved I threw away my oldest copies of what is no known as SA Computer Magazine. They were from 1994, when it was still known as "SA Computer Buyer."

PC Format? Nice enough if you're a gamer and don't keep up with stuff on the internet. But their technical articles are very poorly researched and show a rather shallow understanding of how things work. And the Louis guy who gives tech advice is an idiot. Doesn't read the questions properly so very often his answer has got nothing to do with the question. And his solution for every second problem is "re-install windows." Typical gamer whose only technical experience is building and maintaining his own PC. They should get a real techie with proper experience to answer those questions.

Another mag I used to like but is going down in my books is T3. I used to love all their features on new technology around the world. However, these days I see all sorts of junk that isn't new anymore ... in fact I see cameras and things like that that are already nearly out of date.

PC Format doesn't do their best on test to well either anymore. The put a whole bunch of small laptops on test. Of them, they included the Asus U1F 11.1" laptop which they rated lowly because of its low power ... and some other 12" laptop which they rated high because of its immense power. They are idiots and did it subjectively ... there is an Asus S6F which is also 11.1" and is more powerful than the U1F ... and there is a W5J which is 12.1" but a lot more powerful. If they are going to comare laptops ... at least pit the Asus 12.1" against the other brands 12.1" and you will get a "fair" comparison if they were paid enough for a good name by Asus. IMO Asus is one of the best laptop makers out their ... and their service is beyond amazing. I should know as I've broken my laptop twice and both times they fixed it no questions.

i dont buy the computer mags or any mag

i dont see why i should when i have the internet

all im saying is chicks sell, photoshopped or not they still move mag's

The computer and gaming magazines out here are poor for the following reasons:

1. Their design is either poor or boring. If you think there is not a whole lot you can do with a gaming magazine, take a look at Edge.

2. NAG, your font size is too small. The articles are long and many go into boring details. Nothing in them, and PCF is worse at this, makes me ever really want to buy the game.

3. The internet - once you have a few sources on the web you trust, individual blogs or writers, you track them and they provide you with what you need or lead you onto other interesting things. The internet is updated daily or hourly. Not monthly. Really boring reading about E3 or Leipzig a 3 weeks after the event.

4. Back to the writing - nothing neither magazine writes is ever really funny. Gaming is entertainment. It's not serious. It's really okay to laugh out right at a crap game, or give it a 0 out of 10. Or to go off topic. Just make it entertaining.

What they get right

1. The included CD. With the high costs of bandwidth here in SA, these CDs are the life soul of the magazines, and the only reason I ever buy them. (If it has a Gig of material on that I can demo or play or use, then the magazine has paid for itself)

What they should do.

1. Take a look at Edge. Use that magazine as inspiration.
2. Think of the magazine as an entertainment device. Have fun with it.
3. Take a look at Vice Magazine. Use it as a style guide, at least for some of your pieces
4. Take a look a Joystiq and Kotaku. Their style of writing, length of blog entry, sense of humour... that's the right stuff.

That's it for now.
