hi guys,

i'm currently shopping around for a new notebook. i'd like something that i can use for work but will still thrash out a decent lan game or two over the weekend.

locally, i couldn't find the latest gaming option from MSI:

... the 17" screen is a must-have.

thoughts? i'd like to optimise the deal as best as possible, so any recommendations on alternatives or better pricing would be appreciated. ideally, i'd like to limit the budget to around R12k or so.

What IS it with this ninety-nine rubbish on 5 digit (or more, in the case of cars) numbers? I mean, R1 on R14500 is 0.00689 percent difference in price!

akuma, from what I hear, for gaming you do NOT want a Vista box - you want XP 'cos Vista just sucks too much life out of the guts ..hell, for the top-end gaming laptop on my side, you get a warning that Vista won't do SLI, it still takes XP to do that properly! :rolleyes: Another thing: once you know about it, a 5400rpm drive WILL make you crazy: my previous laptop had a 7200rpm cache drive in 'n now I'm on what's technically a stronger machine on graphics and CPU but it's got this K4K 5400rpm cache drive in and I go crazy all the time from having to wait for it ..this isn't something you want on your gaming pride-and-joy.

So, if you're dead set on budget I can't help you here ..but gimme a bit of leeway and we might be able to get you cooking - the right way.

Those are some pretty good prices eitai, you should contact core www.zastore.co.za and you might just have my business for a macbook pro.

On the more broad subject, what is zastore policy with resellers? is it hard to become one?

I have contacted Core ... they don't wanna sell me Macs ... they say I need more staff and have to undergo training on Macs ... then they Apple wonders why the maket for Macs is so small and hardly anyone sells them ?? I am allowed to sell iPods though.

I dunno ... I'm just used to doing that ... I suppose its a marketing tool ... it sounds better to say 499 than 500 ... its only R1 ... but it sounds like a R100 saving. Think about it.

You and everyone else is used to it, it seems but people pretty much DO know that it's a con - and yet it doesn't stop! And yes, I DO think about it, which is why I know that 500-499 != 100 so all it does is get under my skin ..but then I'm uptight about this. :rolleyes:

Yeah i can't see the logic with that. i guess they want to stop the the smaller suppliers from undercutting the zastore price.

The word "Monopoly" should be removed from the dictionary in my opinion. You swear the word was crafted in the bowels of hell. :D
 
Lol. The only reason I do the 99 thing is because I work for a shop on the weekends ... and I'm so used to telling customers prices of products which always end with 99 and also whenever I give a cost to my manager to work out a discount it works out to 99 ... and so I'm used to doing the 99 thing ... so now I do it all the time ... the other thing is you say is

and my argument to that is that firstly there are still a lot of people, especially people who walk into shops who think of R400 when they here R499 ... my friend also does it ... and secondly ... I wouldn't call it a con, but rather a marketing tool ... because you aren't conning or cheating the person in anyway ... there is no lying involved.
 
But give me a small chance and I'm sure I'll be able to skiffy them into letting me buy one ... worst comes to worst I'll sit through a training next week ... I better get cookies and milk though ;)

macbook pro base model. unless you can get the middle one at a good price.
 
I wouldn't call it disingnuous either ... I would however call iBurst saying they have up to 1mbps disingenuous ... I'm not being insincere by saying R12999 ... when I see that number ... instantly in my mind I see R13000 ... but there is nothing insincere about saying it ... it is an old marketing tool ... I have just become accustomed to using it because I've been working in the shop for so long ... I used to hate it when I first started working there ... now I can't help it :P

"tom-ay-toe", "tom-ah-toe" ..but itBust claiming up to 1Mbps (actually, "m" is "milli" (yes, I'm uptight about that too - it's a tech thing)) was rather more like a politician telling the truth than merely disingenuous.

iburst say up to 1 meg, ive seen clients who get 100kbs download on iburst

how is this lying?

I think our debate will get no where because we both have our own views of the 999 story ... you think it is plain out crookery and I just think its a marketing technic ... I understand what you mean ... and I hope you understand my view.

And I hope we are alive the day tbps or "Tbps" ;) becomes readily available.
 
Yes, I also get up to 100Kbps ... but only at night ... Iburst restricts the usage during the day to enable more people to use it ... unless your right next to the tower. Also I heard that the ASA banned iBurst from advertising a 1Mbps line because it is near impossible for 95% of users.

I been doing my homework on "gaming" notebooks and the best option seems to be any notebook running the new Santa Rosa chipset. They come in various flavours but to use the name Santa Rosa there is a minimum spec they must adhere to so you know you getting something good. From what I have seen the best bang for buck is the Dell 1720 but as soon as you customize it to how you want the price goes higher and higher.

The newer notebooks with the Santa Rosa or any notebook with the new G86 or G84 (8600M and 8400M) do not preform nearly as well as there respective cards in the 7*00 series, so if you want speed then go for a notebook with one of them. If you want to run a game in low settings but using DX10 get a new gen graphics card but note that a DX9 running high settings will prob look better than a DX10 running low.

If you can wait wait until they release the 8800M range but this will prob be way out of your R12k budget.
