Overclock - E6300

I'm an overclocking noob so I have no idea what actually goes in to a decent overclock, thus I humbly kneel before the wisdom of the MyBroadband community and request assistance in this matter.

My current system:

Core 2 Duo E6300
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P
1GB DDR2-800 RAM
600W PSU

I'm running stock cooling at the moment (looking into watercooling though), but I do have a decent amount of air cooling in my case (2x 120mm front intake fans, 1 x 120mm exhaust fan, 1 x 250mm side intake fan). My idle CPU temp is around 35 degrees.

So what do I need to do to overclock this beast? Keep in mind I have never overclocked anything in my life so be gentle on me. Also if you can point me in the direction of any overclocking for noobs online tutorials it would be much appreciated.
 
So far I have tried to overclock with a CPU Frequency of 370 and no changes to the voltages. Unfortunately this made my system horrible unstable once in Windows.

I have now lowered it down to 360 and started with what seemed to be some stability issues but now it looks like all is well. However, running CPU-z showed me that my core speed seems to jump around quite rapidly (because the multiplier seems to switch between 6x and 7x at random intervals), and I don't really know if this is normal or not because this is the first time I am actually trying something like this.

Would I need to push the voltages (and if so, how and what?) in order to pump the FSB higher?

(my CPU temp is currently 40 degrees idle).
 
because you are using a Intel Chipset, rather than a Nvidia one, your RAM is probably running out of steam way before your CPU.

See if you can lower your RAM speeds, as they will go up with the FSB.

Good overclocking does not require voltage increases, except for the last 5% overclock.
 
Your M/B is a very good board, unfortunately i have not had the opportunity to play around with the new P35 chipsets. Take a look at this site, it gives the voltages they were using, it might be useful.

Another thing, make sure you don't strain your memory, try and keep it at it's rated (or below rated) value (800Mhz = 333 x 2.5 or 370 x 2). Thing is to first get your cpu stable and then start pushing the ram.
 
Great! Thanks for all the help. Right now I've got my processor 35% overclocked at 2.52Ghz (360x7). Not sure what the RAM frequency is but I will check it out later today. My CPU temp is currently hovering around 40 degrees idle (after being left on all night) and everything appears to be stable. So far so good...

Another thing I must mention is just how easy this board is to overclock. In the Bios there is a section dedicated to overclocking which you can do automatically or manually. You can set the board to automatically adjust the voltages depending on the FSB frequency (probably a bad idea), and you can do the same with the RAM. Though I make use of neither of those features, what I have found to be really useful is the failsafe feature wherein if you restart with too high an overclock (ie. your pc doesn't work), the board automatically resets your FSB to default which means no need to fiddle with manually defaulting the CMOS on the board itself. Very nice.

dont set auto voltage man, do everything yourself

ive got an e6300 clocked at 3.2ghz with no problems

that board is awesome for overclock fsb will do well over 500 not that you'll get there

u need to get your timing for the ram correct, let say you overclock but it wont post try dropping your ram timing, also overclock pci e to 100 dont go to high with voltage

if it wont post try up the voltage bit by bit, also up the voltage for your memory slightly

overclocking is hit and miss to find out what works
 
I will give that a try, what FSB are you sitting at with your e6300? How would I change the RAM timing, what is the setting likely to be called? I don't want to mess something up because I am changing the wrong thing when I should be changing the ram timing...

I'm running my E6300 @ 3.4Ghz @ 1.44v on an Asus P5N-E-Sli Motherboard 24/7
Orthos 24hr & Super PI 32M stable
 
yup did my settings work ?

do yourself a favour though, that cpu temp is a bit high to be honest

go and download pcmark and run the test if your pc reboots u need to look at cooling your cpu and north bridge

also download a program called speedfan and send me a pic of what it says cause if your north bridge starts burning up your pc is going to run slowly

also what gpu are you using because 8800 will be a bad thing for your north bridge and cpu because of the heat it gives off

gargmel download aquamark and give me your cpu score, i had mine running at 3.4 but the performance in aquamark was slower than 3.2

Yip, true dat, it probably doesn't use both cores either right (but then again neither does Super PI does it?)? I'll run 3dmark06 later and let you know what i get there
