Johannesburg - A flu outbreak has led to blood shortages around the country, the SA National Blood Service said on Tuesday.

The SANBS is appealing to all Group O blood types to donate blood.

Spokesperson Justice Mohale said SANBS needed Group O blood donations from people aged between 16 and 65, who weigh more than 50kg and "lead a sexually safe lifestyle".

"The situation is exacerbated by the flu epidemic which has negatively affected blood collections. People who have had flu should not donate blood until a 56-day window period has lapsed."

The organisation's plans to host clinics in school was shelved due to the month-long civil workers strike in June.

"After the strike we could not continue with our programmes with schools. Schools told us that they had to concentrate on their recovery programmes," Mohale said.

The SANBS requires 3 000 units of blood for private and government hospitals per day. At present in KwaZulu-Natal it only has one day's stock.

"This means we have blood for one day only. Normally we need bloodstock to last for five to seven days. The situation is critical," said Mohale.

Maybe if we got paid..

I got Rejected for being high risk.. cause the lady had a "feeling"

thus i'll never Donate unless i get paid.

its not about being paid 4cer,

I used to donate at least 3 times a year,

but now every time I want to donate I have to practically beg them to take my blood,

They really need to change their attitude...

Maybe they have good reason for not wanting your blood. Unsafe blood is at least as bad as no blood.

Im 18... Fit.. Virgin.. Rarely sick.. take no drugs...

What do they want then ??

Does this make my blood unworthy cause im sick maybe once a year.

How much do you weigh?

I used to be a regular donor but not allowed to donate anymore because of hepatitis antibodies or some such carp. Have to run a whole battery of tests before they'll allow me to donate again.
