Slow XP network browsing

On all windows xp machines I have experianced slow network browsing.
Why is it so slow to go "My Network Place>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows network>Workgroup>Computer>shares"?
Going directly to the "//ip address/share" is instant in comparrison.
It is not the fault of the network because I have tried numerous pc's and networks.

How does one speed xp network browsing up?
 
it depends on allot o stuff
net link 10/100/1000 mbits
switches 10/100/1000 mbits
hops to switches
ammount of pcs on lan
traffic on the lan
pcs on lan running spyware/goggas:eek:
list goes on

Windows XP firewalls are also very slow. Some of my clients switch it off if they are gonna do a lot of network work.

But in general browsing a "my network places" is generally a bad idea. Once you have got more that 5 PC's you should be centralizing your info. Then setup mapped network drives to that location.

Bottom line, you cant speed it up. Windows networking is just badly designed. I have found that Vista is better though.
 
it is slow when browsing because it is trying to find shared network printers in every folder you open up, in every page.

this is a documented thing, dunno why all the mystery

My network is 100mbit all the way through with a decent switch.
Generally there is very little activity on the network apart from internet data going to/from the gateway.
The computers on the network is spyware free, I have checked.
Renamed20070410: The option that you described is disabled on all the windows machines.
Sapphiron: True, but at the moment our server that does our internet/firewalling/etc. doesn't have oogles of hard drive space. The freebsd install plus all the logs basicly fills up the small hdd.
