Dr. Roy said the salt water isn't burning per se, despite appearances. The radio frequency actually weakens bonds holding together the constituents of salt water -- sodium chloride, hydrogen and oxygen -- and releases the hydrogen, which, once ignited, burns continuously when exposed to the RF energy field. Mr. Kanzius said an independent source measured the flame's temperature, which exceeds 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, reflecting an enormous energy output.
But researching its potential will take time and money, he said. One immediate question is energy efficiency: The energy the RF generator uses vs. the energy output from burning hydrogen.

Dr. Roy said he's scheduled to meet tomorrow with U.S. Department of Energy and Department of Defense officials in Washington to discuss the discovery and seek research funding.
As such, Dr. Roy, a founding member of the Materials Research Laboratory and expert in water structure, said Mr. Kanzius' discovery represents "the most remarkable in water science in 100 years."
"This is the most abundant element in the world. It is everywhere," Dr. Roy said of salt water. "Seeing it burn gives me chills."

I saw this earlier today. Could be an amazing breakthrough in sustainable energy, as long as the energy required to generate the radio waves isn't too much.
 
Not to mention the billions of tons of CO2 that wouldn't be emitted.

I'm glad that the researcher is thinking about the efficiency question. Usually they only notice the energy input question once they published their amazing discovery.

I doubt however, that this process will be more efficient than electrolysis since both are just breaking the same bonds. *Crosses fingers*
 
This will never be used or even get the funding required as the oil companies would NOT allow it and since the majority of the worlds governments operate under big business monopoly and profit hourly from oil sales, you figure it out, millions of people would be out of work, countries that are very wealthy would no longer stay that way. There are methods of getting rid of the fuel issues in the world, the problem is the big companies wont fund the research...

This sounds alot like the old watercar story. Hopefully this one proves to be more than just a dream.
 
I'm dubious. There have been many, many attempts to do this over the decades. The problem is that the bonds are strong, and breaking the hydrogen-oxygen bonds costs more in energy than you can get from the hydrogen. Hydrogen's not terribly efficient for cars either; it has to be kept cold and compressed, and you need a much greater volume of it than of petrol to produce the same amount of energy.

Oh my lord. How does this stuff make its way across the internet at such lightning speeds! I first saw this guy burning salt water months ago and disregarded it as not-very-interesting science. But now I have to go to the trouble of actually explaining this...not to you, my thankfully-intelligent reader, but to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Yahoo!, Engadget and oh-so-many others.


John Kanzius shoots radio waves at salt water, and then lights it on fire. This is a fairly impressive display, I mean, we don't think about water as being flammable. But I'm having a really hard time believing that it's energy positive, particularly because it would break the laws of physics. The radio waves simply loosen the bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen and allow them to be easily broken when exposed to heat.

That's all wonderful, and it seems like it's producing energy, except that the radio frequency generator he's using consumes several times more energy than the flame on the other end produces. Why no one has yet put a kill a watt on the other end of the RF generator, I'm not sure. None of the linked stories are really outright saying that this is an energy-positive process, but they aren't saying otherwise either, which is kinda frustrating.

Yes, if we could burn salt water without energy inputs, the world would be a much better place. But the energy required to break the bonds of a molecule of water has always been greater than the energy produced by burning hydrogen and oxygen to create water, that's just the laws of physics. And if we're breaking them...I'm happy to hear it. But somehow I doubt it.
 
wonder if it only works on pure water?
since most good inventions invariably get used in weaponry... :(
if they build a powerful enough model, and zap it at a human (having lots of 'salt water' in our bodies), could they set u on fire??? :eek:
