Finally getting an overdue upgrade.. So far I have my eyes on this:

ASUS Striker Extreme Core 2 Duo Motherboard (Socket LGA775)

XFX Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB DDR3 PCI Express - Extreme edition

INTEL Core2 Duo E6850 - 3.0Ghz CPU - 4MB Cache - 1333Mhz FSB

Total cost so far: +- R8500

Was wondering what sort of wattage PSU i should be looking at, would 650W be enough?

Any suggestions, comments?

Not for the E6850, the quad moves up to around R9000.. But the quad for Q6600 is actually cheaper than the E6850 duo.. wot u guys think?

650W should be fine to run ... as long as you not planning on SLI ... and make sure you get a good quality PSU like Coolermaster or Thermaltake

I bought my Asus Striker Extreme and a 500W Thermaltake PSU today. Going to buy my Q6600 and my Corsair RAM once I have enough money :p

Nice looking upgrade, but rather go for a Q6600 :D

Four cores running at a slower clock speed than 2 cores isnt necessarily better, especially for gaming. For running multithreaded applications it will do a lot better, but most games are optimized for 1 or 2 cores, therefore only utilizing 2 of the 4 cores of the quad core, which are actually slower than the dual core cores. A good article: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/08/08/extreme_fsb_2/

As this PC will mostly be used for gaming and only some application, im still kinda undecided on the CPU

i suppose the only thing to consider is when you are going to plan to upgrade your CPU again? if it wil be next year sometime then im sure the dual core will definately suit you better but if you are going to be using the CPU for the next 3 years then maybe the quad is a more forward thinking move?
Games like crysis and alan wake seem to be starting to take more advantage of multi core processors....and if your willing to you could always try and OC the quad to the duo's speeds.
It is a difficult choice i know :/

inertia consider this:

dx 10 such as crysis unreal etc are made to use four cores

your going to regret not getting a quadcore in about 3-4months

i felt the same way as you until my buddy convinced me im wrong

if you want to upgrade again in 6 months then buy this cpu, if you want a cpu for the next year or 2 dont buy the e6850
