MWEB 4MB ADSL vs Diginet

Hello everyone

This is probably a question that has been thrown around the forum before...

We currently have a Telkom Diginet 1024kbps line that is giving us latency times of 200ms to 300ms on international sites (pasted below).

I am just wondering if the M-WEB Business ADSL Uncapped Static IP - 4096K would give us faster browsing / download speeds.

We predominantly use our broadband for mail (which we are going to route through a 1024kbps ADSL line) and for mission-critical surfing and updates of US-based content management systems. Currently our response times on these CMS sites is very slow which directly effects our productivity and therefore billings - hence our need to increase our broadband speeds.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Just remember that ADSL has a much higher user contention ratio so you will be sharing your 4Mb connection with 20 other people. Diginet will provide you with better latency, but is far more expensive.
 
Yes, there is always a user contention ratio. With business adsl its 20 to 1 for home users its 50 to 1.
 
So worst case, this 4Mbs connection will actually be 204.8Kbps? Hope I'm figuring this out right!

At the end of the day then its probably consistently faster to stay on the Diginet?
 
There's another option - bundled ADSL lines.

Instead of having one ADSL line struggling under the load, you can do loadbalancing on two or more ADSL lines.

ATM I can't remember the company's details, but I'll PM somebody who's looking at that setup to come and post here.

Right, I'm also looking at a very similar solution.

I currently have 2x4096kb's ADSL's, and am in the process of figuring out how to load-balance across them. Bonded-ADSL is the correct term for what The_Librarian is talking about, and there is a company around this country thats playing with it, I just don't know if its officially supported as of yet. I will go hunting because I need at least another 3 ADSL lines before the end of the year to keep up with demand in the office.
 
I saw an article in August edition of Network Times, about Technology Concepts, http://www.technologyconcepts.co.za/ , that 'bond' 5 x 4Mbps ADSL lines to give u up to 20Mbps download, and 1.92Mbps upload, with data bundles 10GB - 100GB... your company see it as one connection, the data is directed straight to TC's data centre, and thru their 2 x 100 Mbps pipes local & international, to reduce normal ADSL eratic throughput.... now thats the kind of speed I want! :D

Hi all, I came across the following device: DLink DLM-3500 Intelligent WAN link manager. According to datasheet (http://www.d-link.co.za/pdf/Datasheet_DLM-3500_09JUL07.pdf) it can load balance 4 logical WAN links, and has a WAN bandwidth of 50mbps. The specs look very promising.
I also look at ways to discard a 512kbps diginet and replace with 4 x 1Mbps uncapped business ADSL links. But I need a way to effectively load balance these 4 links.
Anyone got any experience or knowledge about this DLINK load balancer?

I've seen the prices of TC's ADSL bonding solution. Since the bonded links are so fast, they don't allow uncapped, but only have prices on capped solutions. You pay per Gig package, say you take a 100G or 200G package.

Load balancing 4 x 1Mbps uncapped business ADSL links should yield you about 400G per month I hope (we're looking at a 300+ residential user shared network here....currently on diginet).

Is it enforced, i.e no matter how many people ( be it 50 or 9 ), your ratio will still be 50:1.

Even then its a bit strange since i frequently, when the said file is being retrieved form the "certain" server, i max out at 400KB/s and when im lucky @ 430+KB/s on a 4096kbps line.
 
i just want to make some clear here for myself. maybe im just missing the point here.

Im currently looking on getting a second adsl line with a load balacing router, i have a IS uncapped account - will it work for me or not. Or would i have to get the normal per GB accounts???
 
diginet answers

i am trying to find out more on diginet lines what is limit of pc on a diginet line and would each pc be getting the 2mb speed that you are paying for or would it be one pc/server that gets that speed have tried to get answer from telkom and would you believe they cant give me straight answer
i have +- 80 staff online all day and costing me a small fortune using 8 4meg dsl lines have heard diginet use erlang on them that only allows 30 mac addresses but still no concrete answers that it will handle all my needs
pls help going batty and broke do to telkoms "customer's service":sick:
