Pretoria - A political climate is being created in Zimbabwe in which next year's elections will be accepted as free and fair by all the country's residents, says Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aziz Pahad.

He welcomed the acceptance on Tuesday by both President Robert Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF party and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change of constitutional amendments.

He was speaking at a weekly press briefing held at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. He said: "This opens a possibility of looking at the totality of the Zimbabwean economic and political situation.

"This important development was brought about by the negotiations between Zimbabweans themselves."

The amendments amongst other things combine presidential and parliamentary elections for the first time in 2008.

It would also enlarge the upper house, or Senate, from 66 members to 84 and the regular Parliament chamber, known as the House of Assembly, from 150 to 210 members.

True. I have long held the view that even without rigging (which is what Mugabe does to make sure he wins just in case) Mugabe would still win.

Zimbabweans need to stand up and be counted. If they don't then so be it. They must accept Mugabe and stay the heck away from our border. I do feel sorry for their incapability to fix with the stroke of a pen what needs to be fixed.

On the other hand I might be a little disingenuous. Where Mugabe came from there are tons of others waiting in the wings.

You can put money on that statement.

And it doesnt just ring true for Zimbabwe iether. Try Zimbabwe, Mozambique, DRC, Sudan, Nigeria ...etc.. and even includes South Africa.

It is the way of Africa. Always has been and always will be.
 
Pahad and his puppets have been declaring elections free and fair in Zim all the time, despite what everyone else on the planet witnessed.
Can expect no different this time round.

Only a useless/ignoramus minister could say that Zims elections will be free and fair...
Makes me sick :sick:

Please, cant we even have one minister with his/her head not stuck in the ground!

Well, yes.

First you kill everyone who is not going to vote for you.

Then you hold an election.

What's the problem?
 
Well ... so what they're saying basically is - it doesn't matter if people get killed, threatened, dismembered, bribed etc (long list) - the elections will be accepted as free and fair ....

At least now its official :P
