My personal feelings [about Mbeki] aside, it seems this crime plan has some merit. I think we have all been calling for a complete overhaul of the justice system, and increasing the number of detectives can only be good news.

When he was told it could be costly, Mbeki reportedly said: "It is good, let us go and find the money."That is very encouraging. Even though I am leaving, I do leave lots of friends and family behind, and I would love them never to go through all the criminal incidents I have.

Until I see the plan, it doesnt exist...
Look at operation IRON-FIST.. what a waste of tax payers money that was..

Mbeki doesnt mention the main author of the report...... "Mr Johnny Walker" ..

I would also be excited (http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/Politics/0,,2-7-12_2189055,00.html) about a million unsolvable crimes.
"As a result of the critical detective shortage, the report says, about one million cases do not get investigated each year. They are declared "undetected", meaning no suspects were identified and police had reached a dead end.
Of the remaining one million cases, only 400 000 go to trial."
"Other recommendations include increasing the size of the detective service to between 25%-33% of the police workforce and improving salaries.
A senior police officer was sceptical about the viability of the plan. "
So am I..

It doesn't help adding more police/detectives if ....
More than 23% of the current SAPS are illiterate
Very little arrests/case ends up in court with a conviction
First get the current SAPS and basic skills in order, get a good solid foundation to work from, then we continue

Are they going to rehire all the non-AA staff they fired and will they actually start promoting on merit only? If not - I wouldn't be excited about any 'crime plans'.

Maybe they should stop wasting millions of Rands renaming cities and actually start fighting crime...

Cuba?
Then they will be perfect for weeding out all the anti-government agitators
who are obviously the root of all evil in SA society. :)
I could imagine the penile tumescence index of many a politican
rising tenfold at the thought of such possibilities. :)

21-century Operating System upgrade to fight crime.
It is great news ! - Could be the most important step to turn the tide against crime.
Must include plans how to phase in adaptation ,ensure no vacuum during upgrade - lessons from upgrading PCs, eNatis .....etc..:-)

Secure the areas that need it the most. In Cape Town 3-4 areas are the crime hotspots with close to 80% of crimes taking place in those areas. However the city cant do much as the SAPS is a national body, who have yet to admit that there is a crime issue in south africa.

I think SA's 21st century is fax machines and state of the art 1Mbit Internet connection with a whopping 3gig cap to suffice for the entire police force

Geez, these poor guys are screwed if they do and screwed if they don't around here. Why not give the plan some time and see how it fares out rather than determining a pessimistic fate for it before it's begun?

^^ LOL :) If I had R1 for everytime someone said give them a chance :D
Im not being pessimistic as such, just laughing at it all really...hope they do get it right though. If they don't I will be pretty ticked off.

Dude, I have a cousin who left the police because he was treated like crap, expected to do other peoples work, denied promotion and constantly accused of racism and threats to harm his family. They prefer not to fire people, they just make it as unpleasant as possible.
He's in Iraq now, making more money and arguably saver than he was here.
And please don't just write it of as "perceptions", thats rather insulting to the **** my cousin had to go through.

Aaargh pulease! So he believes he was treated like crap at work!?!?!? boo hooo hooo?!?!? Sounds like he just didn't have the balls to make legitimately. Preferential tretment based on being white is over. Your cousin should get over himself. Noone is here to apease his baseless insecurities.
PS: I also happen to believe that i'm being treated like cr@p by my white manager who happens to have an inferiour qualification to mine. But i won't quit because of his insecure @ss.

Yeah cause our efficient and useful police force cannot possibly be run like the rest of our excellent government departments. Cause black people CAN'T be racist, right?
Anyway, congrats you're the first idiot to be added to my ignore list.

The crime fighting advice in the report comes straight from a book titled "A Country At War With Itself" by Antony Altbeker. I'm sure Mbeki also read it on one of his frequent flights. I recommend the book to all who's interested in this subject.
