Is anyone else affected by crime... or is it a white thing...

lets see ... so far this month, my dad got a gun stuck to his head for his cell phone and wallet.

My house was broken into yesterday afternoon, they stole all my mom's jewelery, only for me to come home and "disturb" what they where doing. And just as fact the guys running away where African.

So am i just dreaming these things happened, did my dad just lose his stuff and need an excuse. Maybe my moms jewelery was never really there.

So is everyone else also affected... Surely Indians and africans are also affected by this...

And anyone who says we have no crime problem explain to insurance then why we've claimed over R10000 from robberies, just this month.
 
Yes... they most likely are, even more than us.

Whereabouts do you stay?
 
i stay in johanessburg.. it just irritates me, cause my mom works her ass off sometimes only getting home at like 8 o clock for months at a time... just to have someone steal what she's bought with her hard earned cash.
 
Alarms, dogs, burglar bars, security gates...
 
Alarms don't help much. I find that you often get houses who's alarms go off at random and it would be more effective if they made a different sound if say the panic alarm was pushed.

Well 2... make it 3 months ago. My notebook got stolen out of the house through a window and 2 weeks later my car got stolen. Both items not older than a year and luckily I had insurance on the notebook and car.

Lets just say I'm not getting any out bonus.

I only have an alarm because it saves me more money on my insurance than it costs to have.

Ah, you're right. That's one aspect I never considered, didn't think it would cover the cost completely.

I'm sorry to hear these things. Maybe you mean "black", not "African" though?
 
Everyone is affected .. its just that whites are feeling a bit more then the other races .. post-apartheid.
Also criminals are not stupid .. there is more stuff of value to steal in the suburbs then in the townships thus more crimes will occur in the suburbs.

Crime is a problem yes .. but you can't wave a magic wand and make it go away .. you can't add more police and hope it will be resolved.

At the root of it all, this is a socio-economic problem. We can go on forever debating this .. but this is my point of view.

1. Health and Education
2. Broad based BEE .. yes BEE
3. Better pay for public servants.

1 & 3 are critical.
On its own, achieving healthy, well educated nation, would reduce crime.
Add Better paid public servants ... nurses, teachers, COPS, etc ... and you will have a better functioning system.

My mother is a maths teacher she has a masters in stats, and also did a M Phil. in the UK, yet she still teaches, because she loves it and not because of the pay. People like this are few and far between .. the rest left for better paying jobs at Stats SA and the likes. For most people teaching, nursing & the police force is a last resort job.
People always say, you get what you pay for ... and that works for the public servants as well. How many cops, detectives etc. still on the field have a diploma/degree in criminology? I bet less then 10%
Next time you are at a private hospital reception look at the speed of the typing by the receptionist .. then go to home affairs and look at the speed there.

Personally I enjoy solving problems, the more challenging the better ... and actually wouldn't mind being in the police force .. but for that kind of pay, i would have to be crazy("stupid") to risk my life and worst of all get no appreciation from the people I serve and protect .. so for now, I will still to my programming .. thank you.

I think i better stop now before I write a new new testament.

Haha, reminds me of the night they tried to break in. Hit the panic button at around 11pm and the doorbell rang at 5.30am the following morning.... security

And yes it was a reputable security company.

To answer the original post, yes of course it does. We are just not used to crime of this proportion and I reckon that a lot of 'township' crime is supressed or goes unreported (not that I trust the tabloids much these days anyway).

Security companies are frightening, on several occasions they've phoned my parents asking them to push the panic button only for them to go "ooh looky there, doesn't seem like it's working, we'll send a technician over". Great peace of mind when there's some dodgy chap in your garden.
 
i had pepper spray and a lead pipe, to take them on.
 
Dros in Hans Strijdom was held up and robbed this morning at 8:15 before opening time. My lightweight works there as a barman
No shots fired, but the manager was klapped about a bit

Pisses me off big time. I'm getting sick of this k@k.

So much so that for the first time in my life I'm seriously contemplating taking my hat and coat and just leaving

You need to make sure that you set it up/activate it every single time you leave the house unattended.

We were going to get one, but were actually recommended (by an insurance broker) not to or at least to not let the insurance company know we had one. If you get a 'discount' on your monthly insurance premiums because of the alarm system then the insurance company expects it to be armed all the time when the house is empty (no little slip ups) or they will not pay you out!!!
