South Africa’s Web 2.0 winners

ROFL now this is funny..
"YouTube with a local flavor
Two of the most prominent local video hosting websites are Zoopy and MyVideo." and Muti news like digg. , they mite b local companies doing it. but they not local hosting sites. they still hosted overseas..

if u ping thru all the others.
mydigital and vottle are the only local hosted sites out of the lot.

And they're all badly programmed

Most homebrew "Web 2.0" (what a horrible term) sites have no idea about web development or standards. Let's see how our "local" counterparts fair:

Vottle - Result: Failed validation, 451 Errors

First one was hand coded. Know about the errors. I dont worry about it much though. Not yet anyhow.
Second one was designed by a "Professional" Website design software package. :eek:

2,3, or even 10 errors on a large page is not so bad though. But when it gets over 100, that's a bit embarrassing.

myadsl's 5 errors is pretty impressive :)

The fact that most of the startups arent hosted in SA dont mean a thing. Our friend telkom makes it impossible for these sites to be hosted locally..

Most social networks that include video and picture sharing push a couple hundred gigs of bandwidth each month which will cost R20k+ a month to host locally

Then, http://psichron.za.net, offcourse there will be minimal errors the site has NO functionality... and the design mimicks that of a 96' Yahoo web portal.. try building a video, picture and blogging sharing platform and then validate..

Myadsl is a vBulletin package that has been bought off the shelf.. building a platform from scratch is another story

Besides validation has nothing to do with the quality of programming..

We should support out local startups not kill them

One of the biggest sites on the net with a Google Page rank of 9 out of 10.. Which means its a highly rated website..

I beg to differ - regrettably it makes the world of difference should you be pushing multimedia content.

You can also blame our friend for that ;)
