Mbeki wishes miners a speedy recovery

Fantastic news that they managed to get the people out of there and hopefully it willhave some positive spin-offs on the safety front as well.

President Thabo Mbeki on Thursday expressed his satisfaction with the successful rescue of 3 200 miners who were trapped underground at Harmony Gold's Elandsrand Mine near Carletonville.

The president congratulated Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs, Buyelwa Sonjica - who, upon learning of the incident late on Wednesday night, sent a team of inspectors and went to the mine herself on Thursday morning to spend the day and evening there. Mbeki also hailed the mine management and the leadership of the National Union of Mineworkers for their collective effort in the rescue effort.

In a statement issued by the presidency, Mbeki said the collective effort demonstrated in the rescue effort was testimony of a true South African spirit.


"Furthermore, the president has asked the minister to conduct an audit of all the mines to determine whether they meet health and safety standards as prescribed in law."

Mbeki wished all the miners a speedy recovery and hoped that the mine would re-open soon after all the necessary safety requirements had been satisfied. - Sapa

Was Mbeki even in the country long enough to know there was a mining incident? :)

I'm really glad there were no injuries
 
I am a bit unsure how I feel about this being a "Mbeki praised" thing.
Rather we should be highlighting the rescuers.

The article itself is about the rescue and the fact that the president has formally acknowledged the great effort 'by all involved' to get these people topside safely.

It is not about praising Mbeki at all.
This is the tail end of the story about 3000+ trapped South African miners that didn't seem to crack the nod in this news forum when it broke.

You can almost hear the voice of Cartman in the subtext of that 'Mbeki wishes miners a speedy recovery' headline.
Thabo Cartman is saying "Hey, dumb biatches - hurry up and - and get back underground, and keep digging out my gold, dammit!"
 
One factor that most people don't seem to consider - forget about being trapped underground for that long, but temperatures at those depths can reach 40+ degrees centigrade. Ask yourself whether you would have been able to survive. Well done to the rescue workers, glad that they all got out.

Harmony Gold has now confirmed most of the miners at its Elandsrand gold mine, trapped underground because of damage to the main hoisting shaft, are now on surface with the remainder due out within the next hour. This effectively brings to a temporary end the news story that generated so much misinformation worldwide. At no point were the trapped miners in any danger and, as Mineweb pointed out late last night, the only problem was likely to be some discomfort, hunger, rank conditions and boredom as the large number of workers queued to be brought to surface via the lower capacity ventilation shaft

Except his name appears right at the front of the title - making it seem about him - when it is not.

Trapped miners rescued! would be "not about him".

Anyways, I am a bit sensitive today maybe - ignore me.

There were many headlines about the miners, none made it on here. Maybe if they were 3000+ white miners it would've, who knows ;)

This one made it because it was the first one I saw this morning and because the others from the previous day were not posted here at all!
Get over Mbeki and just be happy that 3000 people are safe, pretend it was one of your relatives stuck down there.

Never once did I say I was not happy they are saved, or that we should not praise the rescuers.

I am just annoyed that a useless maggot gets reflected glory - as president he has plenty of opportunity to bring glory upon himself, except the only time he makes the news, its something bad, or reflection of good.
 
People are unhappy and accuse him of being away all the time and out of touch with happenings at home, but when he does take interest he is criticised just as ferociously for doing so :confused:

The first I saw of this story was on a off topic forum on some soccer related forum. Came here and there was nothing. 6 hours later when I woke up, nothing. In fact no mention till this thread. I do think that's a sad indictment on this forum (including myself).

Nothing to say about the miners' well-being.
Nothing to slam Harmony keeping the info quiet for as long as they did.
