Why?

What good does it do to set rubbish bins alight and stone cars when you are unhappy about an increase of fees?
Why is it that a protest always results in uninvolved outsiders being assaulted? WTF??

Yet, Helen Zille is arrested for an illegal gathering outside a Police station...

They are animals - plain and simple. Human beings don't react like that.

What if one of the motorists make an accident and die?

I would imagine if I stopped and shot at the particular student who just plonked me on the head with a stone after it smashed through the side window, I would be arrested?

Agreed, the scary part is that they're supposed to be educated.
Well they showed a clip of what was happening a few days ago on e-news and these animals were jumping on tables and keeping other students out of class, really sad.

Of course, you're violating his rights.

It is, if there's evidence of someone being involved in this they should be kicked out immediately.

What is sad is that if a victim retaliated, he/she would have been arrested and something as cynical as "provocation of protesters" would be slapped against them.

Worse, those motorists who file insurance claims against the university will be dismissed as the university state that the students were acting without consent.

Or your insurance wouldn't pay out since there is no cover for riot damage...

Were they ANY white students involved?
Does not make any difference what race or colour or sex these 'people' are, this behavior is not acceptable.
Lock them up and charge them. Then expel them from the institution that they are 'studying' at.

Agree 100%. You have the right to protest. You don't have the right to attack uninvolved 3rd parties as a protest. The Police should film these so called protests, identify the perpetrators and arrest them when they show up on registration day.

Well yes. You can't kill someone because they damaged your car. Retaliation is not self defence.
Banana republicans in training....
Just like France, Canada, New York etc. etc. Just read the news.

This happened while I was studying as well. Protesters was brought in from other institutions with buses. It was a real riot. The sad thing is they protested because the food went up by 50c. Another time because they didn't get predicate, or because they couldn't register for the next semester because of non-payment.

These type of protesters wants everything for free, including a passing grade. Poor sods.

Behavior like that is no longer a protest, it's a riot, especially when rubber bullets need to be fired.

I'm not going to go into race or anything, but I can almost guarantee that most of the protesters there are not from a poor background. Someone who rose from a shack-living, and/or poor background, would value the opportunity such as Varsity. These students are probably there thanks to some Government handout.

Perhaps they don't realise that fees need to increase in line with inflation. Perhaps inflation, to them, is something that happens to balloons at Spur...?

To be fair, the above links are all political riots, nothing related to education. I assumed, Kingrob was referring to riots with regards to education specifically, or thats how I read his post.

University of Johannesburg students..
Well so much for employing them.
