My parental unit is visiting the home of B&H Photo next week and so I'm having her pick up a lens for me. Right now I'm flittering back and forth between two . .

My personal feeling is the f/2.8 is going to offer me more than the f/4's IS.

I could even end up getting the much cheaper Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM Autofocus Lens sans IS.

Anything I should be considering?

The 2.8 will have the edge in low light situations, but the F4 comes out tops in terms of image quality.

The 70-200mm F4.0 IS L is one THE SHARPEST lenses ever made by canon.
Don't take my word for it though:

On the F4:
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS may well be the very best tele zoom on the market today - it is certainly the best Canon zoom lens tested locally to date.

So depends on what you want to do: Low light, go for the 2.8, if weight, IS, image quality and of course your budget is your concern, go for the F4

Thanks, I'll definitely have a look at those.

I wonder, is the lens as sharp on the non-IS f/4? The IS F/4 and the f/2.8 (without IS) are only $50 difference but the non-IS f/4 is half the price of those two. I could then focus on (**groan**) getting some other fixed lenses like a 35mm one.

The IS F4 is alot sharper than the non-IS F4.
