iBurst Coverage - Benoni North AH (Brentwood Park)

Hi,

Does anyone stay in the Benoni North AH (Brentwood Park) region
and has an iBurst Connection ? I am getting my kit today, Desktop Modem, 5m cable & Omni antenna, also ordered and extra 10m cable... I stay in a townhouse complex that has 2 floors..

Planning on bending the Body Corporate rules a bit... he he.. the pole is being erected !!! Yee haa !!

If anyone... what is your connection like, and any suggestions as to placement of the antenna, poles, roof, side of wall, height etc...

Yes, I did sign a contract, unfortunately like many other users,
we have no choice but to make use of wireless broadband for internet access... Wil mostly be for browsing and the odd W.O.W. game.. nothing major.

My inlaws have been using theirs for almost a year now, they are in Northmead, no probs there... their coverage is about the same as mine.

We have no Telkom DSL exchange in our area, and no hellkom lines in our complex, still in process....

Sotory of my life, SA has bad infrastructure, we have to just live with it...

Contract I chose: Play Novice - R299 pm

I have some friends in Benoni that are Wireless boffs, they have their own wireless network going there... cool stuff, maybe they an tweak my setup...

Don't get ibust. EVER!

Oh you poor sod.

I feel for you. I really do.

My word of advice: Turn SMS notification on on you bank account and keep your statements for the rest of your life.

ibust loves to debit you for "missed debit orders" that you did pay but for some reason their system did not pick it up. Then you have to go through the a huge battle where you try to convince ibust that you really did pay. :eek: They even do this to ex clients years after the "missed debit".

Although this seems like a general issue, I have no other way to connect to the internet. So... ""IBust" is my only way at the mo... Perhaps I could make
and arrangement with the bank, so they will monitor and notify me of Debit orders coming from them....

I also had serious issues with Telkom, they are just as useless, hell, most suppliers nowadays are freakin useless, that's life. We just have to deal with it.
 
Cheap Affordable Internet

Hi ,

Just thought of letting you know that if you use the internet for e-mail , Banking and browsing. Then a Data card with an adapter works wonders on a Desktop PC. Its also affordable and offers you the convience of topping up as you need it.

1. Purchase a second hand data card preferably a Quad band card. ( As when neotel launches you will be able to access their services as well )

2. Or Take out a Contract with MTN for a data card only ( Again preferebly a quad band card )

3. Purchase a MTN payg sim and R80 airtime.

4. Purchase a 100 meg data bundle if thats what you use per month.
( or a bigger bundle at R189 )

5. And you hooked up for less than R149 per month with no contracts and you will have the flexibility to swop service providers anytime someone offers you a better deal by changing the sim.

6. The data card will remain your property and should you wish to sell it Thousands of buyers are waiting.

7. Always keep your options open and never tie yourself down to any company.

8. No hassles of debit orders and high bandwith bills.

Contracts are good but very problematic !

I used to stay in that area and I have a few clients using iBurst near there...

I would not bet on an omni giving you the performance that you are looking for - you might need to change to a directional antenna (like a patch or a yagi) Can you see to the Airport/Arwup Medical Centre or the Benoni CBD from your roof? Those are most likely the towers that you will receive coverage from.

Get yourself a copy of utTraceStar or one of the other signal testing programs (look at the sticky's at the top of the iBurst section). You will want a signal strength that is more than -90 (ie towards -60).

My Ping rate to myadsl.co.za last night, after a clean boot was between
90ms & 200ms constant for about 5mins that I ran it. 0% packet loss

Also:

Played EVE online, no issue there (obviously)
Played UT3 Demo online for 2 hours straight, no lag, no jitter, just pure action - uninterupted...

I am impressed considering what I have read regarding online gaming with iBurst. or... as you would call it..."iBust"...

But I suppose I am one of the far and few in between...call me lucky..

You could have gotten a 384 adsl line with the same download speed, much better pings and cheaper bandwidth. But since you don’t have a adsl exchange you will have to settle with what you got.

Oh and btw you suppose to get +- 130Kb/s downloads with iBurst, so I won’t call your connection good exactly...
 
Those aren't very good results for the download speeds and myadsl pings, the gaming sounds good I suppose.

Still wouldn't call you lucky. :/ I assume those downloads were multi-threaded?
 
Okay okay

So I get the message that most of you are against iBurst...

And no I didn't say my connection was very fast... but it does what I need
it to do. I used to have adsl 384 home for over a year, so I know what the speed differences are.. it's not exactly fast.

But hell, the wife pays R150, I pay R150, so in essence, it's not that bad, she never even uses the connection for anything... I have it to myself..

I got the Poynting omni antenna and 5m cable with the contract, also
bought a 10m cable extension for R200. Planning on getting my upstairs
neighbour to mount it on his patio railing, the gain in height should
be of an advantage, considering the location of the desktop modem:

Surrounded by 4 concrete walls, in secure complex, ground floor unit, surrounded by prefab concrete slabs & electric fencing in an area on the
coverage map that says: "Poor". My street runs paralel to Great North Road,
in between Kempton & Benoni, cannot see Arwyp hospital from where I live, apparantly this is where the Distribution antenna for iBurst is.


Will it make a difference if I connect the antenna to the modem, and mount in so, that it is not obstructed by walls, and the height ?

One thing you shouldn`t do is use that 10m extension. Rather mount your modem as close as possible to the antenna and use a Ethernet cable to connect it to the pc. You lose allot of signal with such a long cable.

Like WT said - avoid long antenna cable lengths... rather get the extra height with a longer ethernet cable.

Height definitely makes a difference though - have done tests where 2m of height gain can cause your speed to be 2 to 3 times better.
 
If you can't see arwyp the other tower near you is at the airport- if you can see that you might have some luck there
