Broadband Infraco Bill Adopted

Are we thinking this is a good thing or a bad thing? Just interested in the MyADSL midset :P

Obviously for us it will be good, but the long run, another state owned company? Government involvement has proved very effective so far.

"But the objectives of getting affordable, price-competitive broadband ... must be met and retained at all costs,"

Any cable system will get that right to an extent, I'm saying it's a good thing. :)

I must say that I am growing tired of the comments surrounding InfraCo…like the latest one:
The cost of broadband internet access is set to drop significantly with the adoption in the National Assembly on Wednesday of the Broadband Infraco Bill.

Maybe Alec should be asked the simple question: When?

And why on earth they called it ‘Broadband InfraCo’ I don’t know. InfraCo would have been good enough, but I guess it is not all bad to throw in a ‘broadband’ every now and then to make believe that they are hard at work at improving our high pricing and poor service delivery.
 
Aah, I was going to ask that question as well.

The international cabling will take years, is nothing else coming from the local infrastructure any sooner?

Neotel is already using the national infrastructure. I think this Bill is just something that needs to be done to make the whole debacle legal (Maybe Dominic can clarify this). This infrastructure should have gone to Neotel…but I guess it is difficult to let go of the ring :D

Poignant memories of when the Dementia of Communistications' Roy Padayachie said that telecoms costs would reduce within [searchforum]"6 to 8 weeks"[/searchforum], and lo and behold guavamental Roy did not keep that promise, so I don't expect anything more than empty promises where Infraco is concerned...

What I do find interesting is that Alec appears to be out of synch with the DoC's new NEPAD cable plan - perhaps he doesn't realise that Poison Ivy has yet again turned the tables & chairs over.

Could have been worse: Narrowband InfraCo. This way its not so embarrassing for Saffers.
 
They can call it Superfragilisticexpialidocious Infraco if they like, but at the end of the day the proof of the pudding will be in the eating... or shall I say in the sucking of thru a half clogged straw :p
 
It is taking so long that I don't think that we will ever see significant price reductions. Govt needs to license a couple of competiters and let them fight it out in the market :(
 
All of this talk by the goverments - and no action.

We are still waiting for the out come on the capping on local bw - has anything been inforce so that telkom stops this. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....

No how long will this not take to get going...
