HP NX9010 Lappy's DVD combo drive died

The laptop is old (2.8GHz P4) but it still works. The DVD drive started giving problems with some discs long ago and now it just won't work whatsoever. Typical optical drive old-age death. The local PC shop says that replacing such drives is way too expensive (R2000 for acer lappies) and I should rather buy a normal PC optical drive and put it in an enclosure (which is uber bulky). Does anybody know if I can buy a new replacement drive for the laptop for cheap (as in, not R2000 :eek:)? I don't mind putting it in myself...can't be that hard. I don't want an enclosure + pc optical drive due to less mobility. A DVD burner would be nice but a replacement DVD combo drive should do the trick.

Any help appreciated!

Two words: Laptop Accessories :cool: (they list a likely suitable replacement DVDRW at R720)
 
What I would do, is to buy the replacement DVDRW and an external unit as well, and use the external unit for as long as possible instead of the internal unit.

Whenever you're on site, or travelling, you can use the internal unit.

I've got a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo lappy, the DVDRW unit still works although it is finicky when you want to open it. So I'll look at buying an external unit so that I will be able to read (and write) CD's/DVD's when needed without having to worry about the internal unit.

Laptop drives usually have the same core unit, with a cartridge or model specific plastic casing to fit your laptop bay - my Dell had this and I replaced with a bog-standard DVD-RW unit from Sony, took the old drive out the casing, put in the new one and hey-presto, worked a treat.

Oh that's cool. I emailed the shop bdt mentioned, asking if they can guarantee that it'll fit. Still waiting for a reply but according to you, my chances that it'll fit fine is good. This is good news. I can't believe the pc shop (which really is a great shop) here in bloem almost charged me R2k. At least they had the decency to tell me that it's a ripoff :p

Movies when on holiday at the coast, here I come! :)
