Windows XP on Laptop.

Hey ppl..

Stupid question but when installing Windows on a laptop, does it work the same as installing it on a normal desktop or are there diff????

Can i create partitions in the same manner as with a desktop...?

Need help urgently?

Another stupid question, the drivers for the laptop(HP compaq) will i be able to download them from the internet?
 
I got it from my sister, will i be able to download the required software of the internet?

Yes, you will be able to.

A suggestion - install XP first, then check what drivers aren't supported and download these to an USB memory stick on another PC (if the lappy's NIC isn't supported).

On the lappy I got, I reinstalled XP, and the lappy's drivers was included with XP - so I didn't need to download any extra drivers, except for the wireless PCMCIA card.

Didn't I give you the driver disk? :eek:
 
Well just be careful - if you use a version other than the version supplied then it won't necessarily install all the required drivers. Your touchpad for instance might not work until you install it's drivers.

Also some laptops have a "hidden" partition, allowing you to reinstall Windows from the hard drive. Check the user manual to see if that's supported on yours.

I don't have a clue what to download at the "Driver - Network" area..??

Ok, I am very familiar with the 9000 series, as is Libs :)

I would suggest going for the Windows Update drivers ... the HP compaq drivers will most definitely be out of date by now.

The notebook uses alot of components similar to other notebooks, so you don't need the HP drivers, the Update ones will be much newer
 
Solid and reliable laptop. :) OpenSuSE 10.2 runs well on it without any funny business.

Although its HDD picked up a few bad sectors recently, so I hope it lasts long enough. Already backed up the most critical files just in case the HDD decides to go on pension :D

Last question.. Will i be able to connect to internet without installing any drivers after the windows installation or do i need to download a LAN or network driver?
 
Bravestar - that depends on whether WindowsXP recognizes the laptop's NIC or not. If it doesn't recognize the NIC, then you'll need to download a driver for the NIC on an USB stick and transfer it thusly over to the laptop.

In most cases it will recognizes the NIC without hassles.
