I read this, or something like this, some time ago:

http://google.com/translate?u=http://www.lesechos.fr/info/hightec/4631726.htm

OK, the translation is a bit screwy, but the message is pretty clear. No unlocked iPhone for France then.

But then I saw this (look in the bottom left corner):

http://www.apple.com/fr/

So it is coming then. Not sure about the details - my french doesn't cover any of the polite language in this article :)

I also read this:

http://www.pmptoday.com/2007/10/16/iphone-orange-to-cost-french-399-euros/

 Now, I'm willing to pay a slight premium to get a network-agnostic iPhone, but that's a bit steep. But either ways this is good. It might just be the beginning of the end of the tie-in. It's only a matter of time before someone figures out how to copy the firmware on the unlocked iPhone and stick it on a locked one...

i want one....im goin overseas during december...but not near france...what should i do!?
buy one overseas for about 4k and then unlock it?
i dont trust ebay

The problem with the ones on eBay are when you update the firmware, you make a brick out of your phone. The unlocked ones to be sold in france are unlocked by Apple, so they'll survive the software upgrades.

Is there confirmation from Apple that they'll be selling an unlocked model in France? I wonder how they're going to explain that to their domestic market?

Yeah but the question is, is the part about the unlocked version confirmed or rumor? From what I can make out, the one advertised will still have to be activated with a contract, if not locked.

dont think they need any more confirmation than that do we?

now my french isnt great, but im pretty sure i can make out "29 november" ....
We've known about Orange getting the iPhone for a while now - the query is wrt the unlocked model ;)

lol but then why is the iPhone jpg filename "20070919.jpg"

o0 maybe they planning it on 19th and not the 29th :p
Or maybe they took the picture on the 19th of September.

I have a cellphone, yes, which I hardly use. I have an iPod too, which I use heavily. Hence, the iPhone makes sense - consolidate the two. But yeah, it's not high on my list of priorities.

No, I'm still looking. I tried to read the stuff on www.apple.com/fr but my French isn't sufficient.
On the french iPhone site they don't mention anything about an unlocked version (just scanned through the press release though, will read it again later). They just talk about the features briefly and refer you to the US site.

Having to charge the phone/ipod every day will annoy me.

I've got an "old" Samsung D600 which plays mp3's quite nicely, never listen to them though.

Never been a fan of walkman/ipods.

A phone with a radio on it will be usefull for rugby/cricket scores.
My old nokia has one, but I didn't want to pay R800 for the headset/aerial.

The HTC Touch looks interesting and cheaper.

im in paris and can confirm an out of the box legally unlocked iphone for €750
