500gig sata drive - only 465gig available:

I just bought a Western Digital 500gb external drive. It is mounted in a Transcend Storejet SATA casing.

When I format it (from brand new) only 465gig is available? Any ideas what causes this?
 
Hard drives work like this using yours as an example.


1000 bytes x 1000kbytes x 1000mbytes x 500gbytes =

1000 x 1000 = 1000000 x1000 = 1000000000 x 500 = 500000000000

now we all know that mbyte and gigabye consist of 1024kbytes, mbytes etc so therefore

500000000000 / 1024 / 1024 /1024 = 465.661
