Overclocking newbie...

Hi all,

I've never overclocked before.

I have an E6600 Core2Duo Intel with 2 Gb RAM, and a 7600GT gfx card.

Is this a decent setup for overclocking?

What else do I need to buy to overclock, and what sort of expenses am I looking at?

How do I overclock, and what are the risks? Is the CPU going to die in a year, for example?

I'm not the most expierenced myself, but personally i like to get an aftermarket cooler that is less noisy and better cooling.

I just played with my Q6600 only with FSB and got it to 3.4 with 100% stability. The max temp i got was 62c for a short period whilst running pcmark05.

I would also suggest to not mess with the voltage unless you know someone who can help you, otherwise it might fry the cpu afaik

BTW, the cooler is in the range of R400 that i got

Thanks for the advice.

First off, I'm trying to recall what I have while sitting at work...my PC isn't exactly my Life. ;)

I think it's an E6600.

What cooler do you have? Do they simply replace the stock CPU heatsink?

My office has a link to Rectron, so I can get a cooler from them.

I'm presuming all of the overclocking these days is done via the apps I got on the driver CDs, instead of fiddling around on the Mobo?

I'm not messing with anything until I find someone who can help. ;)

I have the Thermaltake Mini Typhoon 90. You get better than that, but my motherboard can't take the bigger fans due to the heatsinks. Yes, you basically just replace the std fan. The apps you get does do the overclocking, but i do it in the BIOS. I basically just raised my FSB, without changing anything else.
 
To get the Thermaltake Cooler ... you need to go to Corex ... otherwise I can help you with that. If you get a board with heatsink cooling all around it, whether it is gigabyte or Asus, make sure the fan will fit. The Mini Typhoon will definately fit, but be careful of anything bigger. I'm not sure if Rectron has any fans as nice as the Thermaltake Mini Typhoon in that price range or size.

I'll check my Mobo tonight to see what I've got exactly. :)

It's Gigabyte, that's for sure.

Let me check what I've got tonight, and then see what's in order with regards to coolers. :)
