xp booted fine, till now. It booted till I must get the welcome screen, but then it restart. now after 5 times it boots, but very slow. It boots till the desktop shows, without icons, after 2 minutes it shows, then all is fine. Only avg starts at startup.

Hmm, I have had the hassle where it starts and then takes a min or two before the icons etc display. Re-installed mine.

try pressing F8 when u get passed ur BIOS screen and choosing "Last Good System Configuration..." something like that i forgot the correct wording.

Windows xp. No new drivers installed. Will try the above, thanks a lot. If I run the xp installation, and choose to repair my windows installation, will I loose my data, and windows updates?

A repair installation usually keeps your data intact. Not so sure about the updates, though...

My advice is to get a program like ccleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/ install it then let it clean your temp folders and use the startup function to see what is booting with windows, remove everything that shouldn't be there.

Hope it helps

It is times like these that you'll need a Knoppix live CD in order to copy your data over to another hard drive before doing risky business.

The problems you're experiencing can also be your hard drive developing a couple of bad sectors, and Windows repaired the corrupted files before booting up.
