Workgroup vs Domain issues

I have a Laptop at home on a WORKGROUP - I have used this to set up a user account on my NAS. Works fine.

Now: I take my work Laptop on a domain home, and create a user account with this Laptop on the NAS -it sets up the account but when I try and access the NAS, it keeps asking for a password and wants to insert the domain name in front of the user name - deleting it and typing in the user name only doesn't work. What's the deal? I just created it via this same Laptop!
 
Did you try to change the workgroup's name to your domain's name?

For example - most workgroups are called WORKGROUP by default, and if your domain is called MYDOMAIN.CO.ZA, rename the workgroup to MYDOMAIN.CO.ZA and see if that helps.
 
I was hoping not to do this...my company name at home...hmmmmm

Interestingly enough, I can ftp into the NAS via the command window with just the NAS username and password - any ideas?
 
If you NAS has SMB/CIFS with LDAP authentication on, then it will require a user name and password (not usually a problem for machines that login and authenticate against a DC) then you will need to use the user/pass from the DC (sometimes user@domain works better than domain\user).

FTP does not necessarily authenticate against an LDAP server (depending on NAS OS and configuration)
