MTN 3G/GPRS Access and receiving a call

Hi Guys

Has anyone had this issue with MTN? I use my cellphone as a 'modem' to the 3G network, but while using it if someone tried to phone me they get disconnected with no warning? i.e. No message saying this subscriber is unavailable, and no option to leave a voicemail?

As far as I know all diverts are setup correctly. Its annoying cause I keep missing important calls.

Strage.

I also use my phone as modem (Nokia 6233 on Vodacom) and I make voice calls while I download. When people call I can take the call without it dropping. What phone are you using ?
 
Nokia E90 (Brick).

I get SMSs though... so if someone who knows me tries to phone me, they end up sending me an SMS telling me they can't get through or leave a message, so I then have to call them back.

Then it could be a firmware issue. What connectivity do you have to the phone ? I use a USB cable so I take all calls on speaker phone while the phone is acting as my modem.

Perhaps to be on the safe side you can try a prepaid Vodacom sim and see if that solves anything.
 
The firmware has just been updated.

I'll try with a Vodacom SIM...I somehow think its a network issue.

It depends on the make of phone.

Some phones will stop the data connection if a call is incomming, others will just not receive the call as if the sim is not even on the network. I know my N95 does this. My Motorolla V3 Stoped the connection and let the call come thru.

I know it's a certain spec on the phone, I'll have to double check what it's called.
 
If it is that... then I must just buy a data card and get it over with. I've never had the problem before though.
 
Not quite. It depends on the connection.

3G allows for multiple streams at the same time - like Data and Voice (data stream and voice stream) or video calls (video stream and voice stream)

GSM/EDGE cannot do this. Your phone will halt the connection to take the call if you are not maxing out the data connection (not all slots occupied) but if you are maxing it out (all slots are occupied) the caller will not be able to reach you.
 
Something strange though, when its connected at GPRS/EDGE speeds, the connection gets dropped and the phone rings...

on 3G or 3.5G it kills the call as mentioned above.
 
On 3G it should ring as normal and give you the option to take the call like you normally do. There should be no drop in quality on the call even if you are hitting the 3G connection with 50kb/s downloads. This is the case for me with my 6233 on prepaid Vodacom.

On EDGE/GSM the phone should halt the data connection while the call is active. Please note it should not drop the call or close the data connection. Usually when your phone is running on a GSM/EDGE data connection and you take/make a voice call the data connection will stay open but it will not transfer anything. As soon as the call is ended it will send all the buffered requests over the data connection.

I have seen this behavoir on my last 4 phones : 7250i, 6230, 6230i, 6233
 
Same for me, it halts the internet connection and makes way for the call. On some occasions though ive been surpirised to see that the internet page im on still goes while im talking on the phone:rolleyes:
 
Just tried now with the new E90 firmware... it notifys me that I'm dial to a non-Vodacom number, and then rings engaged.

If it doesnt do it to other MTN guys, then it must be a Nokia E90 problem <-- I really dislike this phone...and its just getting worse.
 
Yep, the times that is halts is when you are on GSM/EDGE and it cannot do two things at the same time. The times that is continues to load is when you are 3G that can do multiple streams. UMTS (3G) is a very flexible carrier.

I think it largely depends on what your connection is doing. If you're on HSDPA then it could have completed a 'download' and was not connected. The whole system is a series connects and disconnects isn't it?
 
It would appear that the problem lies with the networks. After doing a lot of searching on the internet, I've seen many other users in other countries having the same problem, that is while an HSDPA 3.5G connection is open the network cannot route the call to or from your phone.

With networks upgrade to 7.2MBs, in some parts of London, and of course Taiwan/Japan, this problem seems to be resolved.
