I've updated my iPhone firmware

Yes yes yes, I know they say DON'T UPDATE UNLOCKED PHONES...but I just couldn't resist. Apparently, the new firmware has a bluetooth headset battery indicator. (So...how could I miss something as coool as that haha)

So....lots of reading later, I know the plan:

1) Virginize iPhone (this includes fixing the base-band, restoring the seczone and re-locking the phone)
2) Upgrade to 1.1.1 using itunes (and start praying)
3) Jailbreak the phone!
4) Activate it for use on Any-sim-card!

It was actually a pretty easy process, upgrading in itunes took the longest with a 45 minute download time on my 4Meg line...but now it works 100% and I'm very chuffed I can pull of such Hax0rz
If anyone wants to know exactly how I did it, I'll tell you - but I can't take responsibility for anything that goes wrong!

If you buy one overseas now, it will probably be on 1.1.1 already. They've made it super easy to unlock...takes 2 minutes. There's even a video and everything.

And to think, there's some guy on bidorbuy charging R500 to unlock the phones. He also wanted to charge me first R1500, then R1000 to upgrade and unlock and it took me 10 minutes (bar the time for iTunes to download).

Oh how I love the power of the Internet.
 
I wanna buy one from have2have, but is this genuine, actually an iPhone and not the iTouch?

OK, it is genuine and shipped from the US apparently, anyone buy one from Have2Have yet?

Have to have are pretty reputable. Their waiting time was 3 weeks about a week ago, but I've heard suppliers are having problems (since apple's new policy to only let people buy iPhones by credit card was introduced). If you want an iPhone check out this guy. I dont know him, just saw the ad on bidorbuy - but he's in Cape Town so you can go meet him and pay COD (reduces risk). Also, he's offering a warranty of some sort (I assume he's offering to fix it himself if it breaks...)

Otherwise, I can hook you up as well.

LOL, sounds risqué... I've contacted Have2Have though, I'll wait and see... Yeah I've heard about apple's policy this could be a problem.

I'm interested how you gonna hook me up?

I'll be receiving my payoneer card soon, so... maybe I can use it to purchase from apple directly and have it shipped? is this possible?
 
I doubt Apple would ship out of the US, as you are supposed to take out an AT&T contract with the phone.
 
Yep, I read their site shipping FAQ and no shipping outside the US looks like it.

How did you get yours then? bidorbuy?
 
I did actually buy one on bidorbuy, but the seller couldn't supply fast enough (he's only getting them in a few weeks), so I actually ended up importing a few myself which I sold!
 
I got a Iphone that I need to add Vodacom's GPRS APN. Can anyone help me with that?

Are you actually using a a 1.1.1 device that has been unlocked?
the new devices ship with 1.1.1 but all the unlocking methods require you to downgrade to 1.02
the reason they say dont upgrade is that when you are using firmware 1.02 and you unlock the device using anySIM etc the application writes changes to the baseband, and after upgrading the Baseband is corrupted to an extent. the 1.1.1 firmware checks the baseband and it actually changes your IMEI making it super easy for techies to see if your device has been hacked ... but what has been happening is that the IMEI of some devices are lost due to the Baseband been totally screwed.
Once this happens you are not able to do a Virgin restore ... the iPhone is turned into a iPod Touch.
 
You are a little behind.

1) If you have a fresh 1.1.1 phone, it's very easy to unlock...you don't even need to plug it into a computer. All you need is a wireless lan connection, and a sim-card with no pin code (any sim-card). This is the latest new method to unlock a 1.1.1 phone - no downgrading required. You simply use the emergency call screen to enter the settings dialogue (there is a youtube video that shows how), set up wireless lan, then goto jailbreakme.com using safari and vioula - the phone is jailbroken. Install Anysim 1.1 using the installer and the phone is unlocked.

2) If you have a 1.0.2 phone, which has been unlocked, the baseband and seczone have been modified. Before you upgrade, you "virginize" the phone, which means re-locking it and repairing the baseband and seczone to what it was when it came out of the Apple Factory. You can then proceed to ugrapde to 1.1.1 and then unlock using the same method as if you got a fresh 1.1.1 phone.

I had a 1.0.2 phone, unlocked, and hence had the modified baseband and corrupted seczone.

I used a tool to virginize the phone.

I then proceeded to upgrade my 1.0.2 firmware using iTunes to 1.1.1

Then, I used the easy method to jailbreak the phone, and unlock it for use on Vodacom.

I now have a 100% working iphone, which was on unlocked 1.0.2 firmware and is now on unlocked 1.1.1 firmware. No downgrading or anything.

1.1.2 only adds language compatibility I think...so no point to upgrade.

It won't take them too long to find an exploit for the new 1.1.2 software. If someone can make it, someone can break it!

Ye. The internet is an amazing place.

Apparently, even if you have bricked your phone - there are ways to fix it, restore it, and get it working as a phone again.

and it wont take Apple long to fix it, thats the one thing stopping me from getting one (yes, I'll use it as a weekend phone, I've seen youtube videos of it surviving falls and scratches, so it might survive me when I'm drunk, something my HTC Touch wont do): The second you hack it, Apple brings a new patch (with new features) out that might brick it, then you hack it again, they patch, you hack, they patch, you hack...some months and 1GB of updates and hacks later, they release the iPhone2...

Er..I'll wait for the Google Mobile OS/Gphone...
