So I got my omni antenna today...

...but the connector that goes onto the end of the antenna cable doesn't fit into my UTD. It's a small round little copper thing, whereas the socket on the modem (it's one of the white desktop ones) looks like it needs a square shaped connector with a round hole. What's the deal?
 
lol you most likely gotten a omni antenna for a wireless router/wifi card/etc

shame...
 
Is it a standard iBurst one? Otherwise you probably bought the wrong antenna/ connector.

You need the extra tail bit that connects to the standard Wifi "round copper thing" and ends in the iBurst square shaped piece.
 
I e-mailed, but no response, so I phoned the helpdesk. They said I must have been given the wrong connector. So I have to go in to their offices and they'll replace it.

I ordered it directly from them and paid for delivery as well. Now seeing as I've been a customer for 2 years certainly they must know what sort of modem I have, seeing as you choose your modem when you sign up. So certainly they had to know what UTD I have. I also don't understand why I have to now go all the way to their offices when they've already charged me R100 for delivery and when the mistake is theirs.
 
To tell you the truth, iBurst couldn't care less about your R100 that you paid. They don't give a damn about customer well being or keeping us happy. :sick:
 
and AFAIK the square connector thingy is standard for all iBurst modems so they didn't even need to know which one you have.

So having no other real options, I went to their offices and exchanged the connector. Installed the antenna with help from some DSTV technicians who happened to be around and helped me to mount it on a pole on the roof. My download speed before was 214kbps, with the omni it is now 725kbps. Upload went from 212kbps to 262kbps, anybody know why the small change in upload speed as compared to download?
 
The upload is good enough. The download is what you want... congrats. :p

Its probably because the upload was already pretty good, not sure why upload isn't as badly effected by signal strength though. Max upload is 384, compared to 1024 for download.
 
That's a pretty good increase, more than triple the speeds you were originally getting. Consider yourself lucky. ;) I've heard stories where external antennas did nothing but drill a hole in your wallet. There have been reports of speed increases ranging from as little as 10 - 20%.
 
In the good old days when I used I burst I also used an omni.Somewhere on this forum a member {Gres I think}pointed out that the omni will not enhance your upload speed in the same proportion to your download speed. I experienced the same problem.Get a directional antenna it works better in the long run if properly aligned.

Good advice, also tower hopping could occur and as more users connect to your preferred tower you will see a decrease in access speed...
