Setting up iBurst on another PC

Networking has never been my strong point, and I'm almost clueless when it comes to rigging more than one PC up with an Internet connection. :p

How exactly does one setup a PC in another room so that it shares the current iBurst connection? Currently the modem is connected to my PC via USB cable, no Ethernet is involved. Is it possible to simply connect the other computer via Ethernet cable directly to the modem, or is a router required?

You're going to need a router. The cheap solution otherwise is to connect the 2 computers via ethernet cable and then set up a shared internet connection for the 2nd computer. Problem is the 1st computer has to be on aswell then... Plus i dont think both can use the internet at the same time either.
So ya, router it is. One that has an input for an external modem. I use the linksys wrt54gl
 
OK so who can give me the cheapest quote for a router? I've been spending quite a lot of money on WiFi equipment and other hardware, so there's not much left to spend. :p :rolleyes:

I presume this involves simply plugging the Ethernet cable into the modem, and connecting it with the other PC?
 
What's your budget?

I have @ for R500, it's a Netgear 4port 10/100 broadband router with DHCP, DNS, firewall, port forwarding, VPN, etc.

As mentioned, the cheap way is to use a cross-over cable, but bear in mind, of the main PC is off (upgrade / virus / PSU failure / etc), the whole network is off. With a dedicated router this won't happen.

NOTE - You dont require a router.If you want to be cheap setup ICS aka Internet Connection Sharing on your current PC ( the 1 with the internet on)

Windows Help file will tell you exactly how to set it up

You don't need a router.

You connect the two pc's via ethernet connection. You choose the properties of the dialup connection (Iburst) enable Internet connection sharing for your network card, and voila, the other pc has internet.

I did this past week with a USB ADSL modem and a laptop and desktop on Vista.

nope, u cant have one pc connected with usb and the other with ethernet. Only one pc at a time.

lets not kid ourselves... sharing the connection may solve the problem but after a couple days you'll get irritated with always having to have both PC's on. But ye, the only cost is the crossover cable.

The main PC with the Internet is never turned off, so that shouldn't be such a big deal. :)

OK, so basically all I need to do is turn Internet Connection Sharing on, connect the second PC via Ethernet, and it will share the iBurst connection? Also, can both PC's use the Internet at the same time with this setup?

yip, should be pretty simple (famous last words). Connect the PC's with a crossover cable and run the network wizard on both. You just have to select the setup that sounds like what u want (dont know exact settings).

Im taking a flyer, but im guessing u connect your main pc to your wug router through ethernet aswell. I hope u have two ethernet ports on your main pc then...
 
Whatever.

Plug a normal Ethernet cable in your pc and connect it with the other pc. Like I said above, check the dialup connections properties and look for the ICS settings, choose your Lan adapter and connect to Iburst.

Check the second pc by opening a browser and voila.

Yes I am. I bought an external USB to Ethernet adapter for the WUG, since my internal network card broke. All I have to do is replace it, then I basically have two ports.

PS: I assume you're on JAWUG?
 
GBM, spend a few rand and get a router as it's far better than the way you intend doing it, besides with a router you have "other" advantages as discussed before.
 
You should know by now that I rarely spend money on anything. :p

Besides, I'm flat broke by now. I had to buy myself some serious wireless equipment a few days ago. ;)

This is one of those times it will be well worth the money getting a router, besides the frustrations of connecting those PCs' without one and the "bonus" that a router gives you will make you wonder why you never got one before.
