Vox Telecom to ‘smash Telco costs’

smashing call costs? they seem overly optimistic, but we'll see.

Until we can cutout the telkom analogue line rental, it won't be cheap, in fact it won't even be cheaper because of telscum wholesale termination rates. The majority of backward South Africans will continue to feed the monster.

It's pathetic how few South Africans (with broadband) use Skype. Come on people.

As long as I am STILL paying Telkom R150 p/m in line rental for a Klingon telephone service with my ADSL, I don't see the financial benefit of VOIP until it starts to save me more than R150 in the actual calls that I make... If I was Vox telecom, I'd be dragging Telkom in front of the competition authroties, ICASA, and a fast-moving goods train...

So wait, competition is good but when Vox doesn't like competition they just buy them out, i.e. Storm. Interesting thing to say. Competition is only good when it doesn't affect you.

Face it, fixed-line telephones are old-fashioned and on its way out. Except maybe for businesses, I can see them staying there.
 
I use Skype for VOIP and don't understand why many people do not.

I've got a friend - his ADSL was intalled a few months before me, but obviously with one of Telscums free 1000mins bundles - Until I had my ADSL line installed and Skype on my PC - he did not even take the "chance" (if you will) to download and install Skype.

It must be noted that he still calls me from his landline and is never online with Skype - MSN yes, but not Skype :rolleyes: - I don't get it either.
The novelty was their initially for him when he 1st used Skype - but like the masses out there - its just easier to pick up your analogue phone of old and make a call with your 1000mins of "free call time".

How the beast still has influence....

Won't VOX just be reselling Telkom's internet service?

Perhaps they can provide an alternative for voice, i.e. using VoIP instead of a normal phone, but this is nothing new (Skype, SIP and a million commercial services) and still requires a Telkom line and Telkom bandwidth.

Until they prove that they're not just-another-reseller, I have no respect. Respect needs to be earned.

Thats business for you. I believe Storm was ripe for the picking and very strategic for Orion Telecom more than the other Vox business units. The acquisition ensures that Orion dominate the corporate LCR market.
 
Most people is this country has a phone.a normal phone, currently voip is not much of use for normal people to make calls. You would save if both parties have adsl install yes, most of the people i call on a regular basis don't have adsl and the few that do don't leave (or have time for voip) their pc's on.

Until telkom is out of the way things cannot change!
 
If not for the Telkom Klingon line rental, you would see a savings immediately, without making calls. Vox to Vox is virtually free, Vox to Telkom local is the same as Telkom to Telkom local, Vox to Telkom national is 23% cheaper than Telkom, Vox to Cellular is 20% cheaper. The only thing screwing everyone over is the Telkom line rental...

And you wonder why Telkom couldnt care less about making changes? They have made their billions in consumer profits from just 10% of the SA population. The other 90% are only about to become consumers; consumers with extremely low levels of expectation. They dont need to change.

Do we not recall that the monopolistic standpoint from government was a symptom of apartheid. Where is the change Mbeki? Or is it Zuma now?

I work with these guys on a daily basis and many companies ARE very interested in Vox (Orion Telecom) because they do reduce call costs. They also dont charge for their hardware meaning that saving is guaranteed - they make their money on preferential rates they provide clients - their margin is built in to that cost already. All enterprises have an LCR program and Orion is a preferred supplier in many of these instances.

voipbuster...Not too bad on the pricing.

But I phone Skype-to-Skype so it's free. Probably saving R4000 per month in international calls. Schweet:D

Voipbuster's international call rate to SA is ZAR 0.31 per minute, Telkom charge ZAR 0.52 for a local call! (ex VAT too!). Geez, Telkom must go, they make me sick
