Network connection priority

In the olden days, when we still used Dial-up connections, whenever you dialled into a phone number, the dial-up connection would override the LAN connection, ie. browsing will go over the dial-up and not the LAN.

I currently connect my TyTN via USB and Internet sharing (on the TyTN) to my XP notebook. However, the machine is still trying to browse using the LAN connection, to the effect I have to disconnect the LAN to browse via the TyTN's shared connection. This is a pain, as I would like the LAN connection still active for local server connections, while browsing at decent HSDPA speeds.

I have tried the whole Connections->Advanced->Advanced settings for the priorities, but it made no difference.

Any advise please?

Have you tried changing your IE options?

Tools > internet options > Connections > "Dial whenever a network connection is not present"

also

start > run > cmd > "route print" and look for "Network Destination" where 255.255.255.255 shows up. take note of the gateway and interface addresses.
Now run ipconfig and confirm your ip routing is using the dialup's address (or has it listed)

There's an option in the network connection settings - I think under tcp/ip properties > advanced - called "use default gateway on remote network". If you change this setting you might get different results.

If this doesn't sounds like a very confident recommendation, you'd be right. Network connection priority seems to be a black art in Windoze.

With my E220 card and Vodacom or MTN 3G, I do get priority for the 3G over the LAN connection (so much so that I have to add routes using the windows route command for remote segments on the LAN).

Slightly different connection, as you don't use ICS. I activate ICS on the TyTN and then connect to it from my Notebook ... and I think this is where the problem comes in. If I can figure out how to get BT PAN to work on my Widcomm BT module on the HP, I won't have the issue (as it works perfectly on my Macbook Pro)
