Vodacom Business also wants to be an international connectivity provider and plans to build undersea cables, either as part of a consortium or alone, on the east and west coasts of SA.

Quartero says that by 2010 Vodacom Business will need two cables.

Nice, bring it on. More bandwidth we like!

But if all goes according to plan (I know...) ... <abuse>content goes here</abuse>...we will have SAT3, Seacom and EASSY by 2010 according to recent reports.

Thats a $%&*load of capacity. Don't get me wrong, there's no such thing as too much bandwidth, but why would Vodacom go through the expense of laying 2 cables. How big can the SA market be???
 
This is definately good news... We will probably see price cuts but not big ones if vodacom decides to match that of telkom.....

Telkoms own child is taking the fight to them. Go Vodacom!

Neotel should be taking down some notes, seriously, vodacom is doing more for broadband than anyone else.
 
Hell if Vodacom offer WiMAX as a solution I can use at home, and its not too expensive.. I'll take it..

:confused: since when is Vodacom laying submarine cables? - Vodacom will have overseas POPs, but AFAIK only using the cables that are available to Vodacom - specifically taking advantage of the open access model that both SEACOM and EASSy have been 'marketing'.
 
They have mentioned they're investigating laying cables, or investing in cables to be laid... which is great.

Vodacom mentioned that they were looking at the possibility of laying their own cables, either with a consortium or by themselves, at the conference
 
Were they specifically talking about sub-marine cables, and not maybe terrestrial cables for their planned metro fibre rings?

They were talking submarine cables...

1 from the east coast, and 1 from the west coast.
