mmm, product looks good (depending on contention ratio's), now just about pricing
Telkom 4mb is more like 512kb the past month, so 700k is good.
If that is uncapped for about R1000 with reduction in call costs, this wil FLY!.
Sub 1Mbps...I'll pass
We're not in the bloody 90's anymore to have to be content with 700kbps

everybody moans the about how 'slow' telkoms adsl is compared to rest of world, now they say 'high speed' and its less than the 4mbps? and propably not cheaper? am i missing something?
in Feb 2008 vodacom (and mtn i suppos) will have hsdpa @ over 3mbps? so how can 2mbps be considered fast?

I can understand that view from you guys with adsl feo :)
But considering that loads of us don't even have dial up because of the costs, even their basic offering would be an improvement for us. Based on affordability of course.
What a load of croc *****

No prices, what a waste of reading time. I don't want voice and sms with my internet. Please don't include useless crap with all your services to try and justify the high costs.

If there is a high cap for a reasonable price I am in. It would be really cool if the ISPs like Axxess could offer prepaid bandwidth like they do for ADSL for the Neotel network. Obviously the price per gig would have to be lower.

My thoughts too.
Neotel seems to be dragging it's feet?
Neotel is not competition, it's a joke. Go back from whence you came and can we have someone else, from a 1st world country, come over here and show these morons how it's really done?! I'm so sick of this country's inability to get anything right!!!

Yeah. I would pay R400 for uncapped.

more announcemints...nice.
You know what, I'm not reading any other article with the word Neotel in it. I'll just wait for some flyer or some street ad/newspaper/magazine advertising their services.
[waits]
....
Why don't they want to specify the cap ffs?

Maybe we should disillusion ourselves and believe that the article was saying 700kilobytes per second, rather than kilobits...

Because they suck

Well, if you really want something better than dialup then there's no reason not to go for do1 at R199pm.

Questions to Neotel: will Neotel allow other service providers, in particular ISPs, to provide services over their network to customers, in particular able to compete against Neotel services? For example, will companies like Vox be able to give me internet and voice services over the Neotel CDMA2000 network? If so, will I as customer have to also pay Neotel some monthly fee for this, or will it be included in my monthly cost to the ISP? Also, what is their policy on VOIP, e.g. Skype?

Hope so!!
The High Speed Internet Access, Voice and SMS offering promises average download speeds of between 300 and 700 Kbps with peak speeds of 2.4 Mbps or 3.1 Mbps – depending on the end user device.
The Basic Internet Access, Voice and SMS service will be a dial-up replacement package with peak speeds of 156 Kbps and an average throughput of 100 Kbps
Dial-up replacement!?
Yum from 7KB/s to 100KB/s :D

kb not kB.
aah! there goes my speed!! :p
The standard definition is 1 kilobit = 103 bit = 1,000 bit. In the context of storage-memory and address-space sizes, the alternative binary definition of 210 = 1,024 bit is occasionally used (see Binary prefix), although this usage is ambiguous.
using Bit Calculator!! http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/
100 kilobits = 12.5Kilobytes
still thats 12.5KB/s IMO better than my 64k wireless :(
*EDIT*
After doing the calculation unless they going to charge R200 for this Telkom will still beat them in speed, so then the question is WTH? are the fiber optic cables for??

Because there is no cap?
:D Brilliant! Ever the optimist
Maybe we'll get the real high speed broadband packages when the mega capcity cables land? I thought Neotel's CDMA200 infrastructure was an interim system while they're laying their fibre. When the big cables land and they hook up their fibre network to them, then we'll see proper broadband.
Thats just me being eternally optimistic. But if this is the best they can offer then it better be cheap, and I mean f%&Ģing cheap.

Uhm the dial up replacement is twice as fast as a traditional dial-up/56k and even then thats avg vs best case dial up [:p] uhm i think having 100kbps as a standard offering is quite good actually.. it just depends on how this offering is limited that will either make this the internet solution SA needs or just another Telkom like profit product.
e.g. if its time based then they can keep it, if its limited via bandwidth then its ok depending on how big the allocation is. Me wonders if they will try and change the pricing model Telkom imposes on consumers tho. I mean, lets face it, paying for bandwidth and line/wireless rental ;) is a big money maker especially if you are the provider of both services especially when u have isp's reselling your product and having to add additional things to it :p
One can only dream... right now im dreaming 12MB/s + :D
*gulp*
Then we'll be on par with Japan. :D
This time, I think you mean kb. :D

Am I gonna be forced to pay for a telephone line again WHICH I DONT WANT??!!
Question: Will there be Internet ONLY offerings?
Anything less than 1Mbps and touted as high speed is a very very very sick joke
Most providers in South Africa call anything as low as 384 kbps (peak) broadband.
Neotel describes its 2.4 Mbps and 3.1 Mbps (peak) offerings as high speed, and has specifically said that it does not regard this as true broadband.
Don't forget to compare apples with apples (peak with peak, average with average) - EV-DO Rev A can be compared with HSDPA/HSUPA in terms of RF performance, and the real end-to-end performance will also depend on the capacity of the backhaul fibre network.
dgerber
28-11-2007, 01:35 PM
Try any form of online gaming or other low latency apps with EV-DO... not going to work - it's similar technology to 3G - (US Version).
Wireless cannot compete with fixed line connectivity - this is a joke to say the least.
At least Telkom looks at Wireless only as an alternative where they cannot provide DSL.

they do say that speeds will depend on the type of end user equipment, do they mean 700k with their cdma, and higher speeds with 802.11, or some other technology?

Stop complaining. 0.38mbps (384) is telkom's slowest while 2.4mbps is neotel's slowest. As they said. They don consider 2.4 or 3.6 true broadband. More is yet to come so stop moaning. Have any of you lot ever even downloaded at 700KB before? If not be quiet

More is always to come with NoTel...I reckon their service will be as k*k as the cars their parent company sells.
Telkom 4MB still rules and if next year comes Telkom may roll out 8MB and Notel may push their delivery out with yet another quarter and another.
Perhaps they will increase their offering by 256kb per quarter as well...:D

When people, who are trying to sell you something, don't want to tell you how much it costs, you better start worrying.
