Neotel's presence is going to be felt in all earnest when it launches a "fixed mobile phone", its first consumer product in the second quarter of next year.

So second quarter it is.

The snazzy wireless phone will use the code division multiple access technology, giving subscribers instant internet access and enabling them to make voice calls and send text messages.

The best part about the device is that it's completely plug and play, no wires, no lengthy waiting for technicians. You just plug it into a power point and you are good to go.

The billing model is yet to be finalised but the company has assured consumers that they will only pay for usage. Rental fees will not be levied.

What users will also find attractive is that the gadget will be available over the counter. And the anticipated cheaper rates, compared with Telkom's, will be the proverbial cherry on top.

I'm getting a tad miffed with hearing the phrase "by next year..."

I really do hope that Neotel will deliver this time, instead of talking.

Billing model sounds good - pay for what you use. The rental model is outdated. So light users will pay little, and heavy users will pay more, and this is fair enough for myself.
 
Make the device cheap, make phone calls cheaper than telkom and you'll have 50% market share in a week.

This is great of the non-"power users". Plug in and basic internet/sms already active.

The lag is what would worry the gamers. Put 3GB at R150 and you'll steal most of the market.
 
VoIP phone for R79.95 that should do tha job??

Looking at the other Article 12KB/s w/ Phone & SMS is not too bad IMO it will work with most Source based games and MMO's don't expect BF2 to work with it :D

I have a 64k wireles connection and trust me get about 3KB/s on a good day...

This looks like a mistake on the part of reporter. A pure "usage" model doesn't really make sense.
 
Why would anyone want to actually go back in time and install a fixed line voice salution. We all have mobile phones. I just cannot understand this.
 
Well lets see what happens, they should clean up the market with this offering, expect some competition from Telkom.

If I read between the lines there will be no phone line rental and therefore no ADSL equivalent line rental. That will HAVE to hurt Telkom.

I think it would be a good time for telkom shareholders to sell, next year will be a Baaaad year for them.

If you look on Neotels website, it looks like they have an initial 3.1Mb/s internet offering, phase b will be 15Mb/s and phase 3 will be 70Mb/s. Wow what a way to go.

So I'll be able to use this device with my (current) landline number? (Just port it accross)

It sounds like a cellphone to me - will it have a SIM card, or will it use a telephone line? I'm confused...

It will be like a cellphone except that you can move from one base station to another like a cell can. So you can only use it in your area I would guess. So in theory you can take it to any friends that live in the area and it should work.

johan the reason a fixed line is better than wireless is because of latency. if you playing a fps game online you want the lowest possible ammount of latency you can get and wireless just doesnt make the grade. for mmorpgs its different as most things are slower and reaction time isnt that important.

Sorry, this is just more pie in the sky - in actual fact the whole article is just more going to do this and going to do that drivel from NOtel...
 
If thats what they do, they would sink Telscum v v quickly I reckon..
