Virgin UK: 50Mbps broadband for all next year

Virgin Media's top executive has said that the company will be launching a 50Mbps broadband package in 2008. Speaking at a next-generation broadband summit and reported by Channel 4 News, Virgin's acting CEO Neil Berkett said: "We'll never know exactly what demand there'll be for super-fast broadband until it's in people's homes and workplaces up and down the UK.

2 of my friends in London have virgin cable service that is supposed to include "up to 8meg" internet connection. When i'm there on business i can never get any downloads above 2mbps, even from sites in London. The upload speed is also really pathetic. But still 2mbps uncapped is better than 4mbps capped :rolleyes:. Just thought i should mention that 50mbps is probably also going to be a lot slower.
 
i've seen a number of complaints on UK sites I visit where people say similar things to what Gambit has mentioned. But as he states the uncapped bit a winner nonetheless

you have to differentiate between virgin CABLE, supplied via a cable modem/set top box
and virgin ADSL, supplied via the same method in S.A

also, note, some virgin customer with cable tv get their broadband via virgin ADSL, for reason I dont feel like elaborating on.

Now, proper CABLE internet access DOES NOT (repeat...DOES NOT) work on the "up to..." system..it either is 20mb or it is broken.

ADSL works on the "up to..." system, depending on distance from telephone exchange.

Virgin CABLE NEVER did an 8mbps package...it went 1/2/4/10/20 and now 50.
Virgin adsl DID have an 8mbps package (ADSL 1 limit...)
guess which one your friend has?

and yes, it is highly asymetric, with rubbish upload speeds.
teh proper cable side is even worse when it comes to upload speeds, but as long as consumers buy a product based on download speeds we will hardly ever see upload speeds being mentioned.

It will be slower. I had a 24MB line in london and could only download at 600kb/s. Its worth a look though.
