Pay TV satellite successfully launched

Wonderful

This means that not only will someone with dstv need to buy a new decoder, but also a new dish to point in the opposite direction since this satellite is over the atlantic.
 
This sat will replace Sirius 2 & 3 which currently broadcast Eastern European and Nordic channels.

There's quite a lot of content there, and a wide range of encryption systems in use so it's anyone's guess what decoders you will need if any.

To clarify, Yep, it might be FTA, so nothing to decode. You would need a receiver of some sort though.

The fixed bit is the aerial. You will need another (bigger) dish pointing in a diff. direction because 5 degrees East is far away from 68.5 (DSTV)
 
I would gladly buy a new decoder and dish for HDTV with good content, something along the lines of Sky TV. No problem.

But I won't be doing it for Rhema and Prison TV and whatever other sh!te is being punted around.

Sirius 4 is not "visible" from South africa, as it lies "below the horizon". I wonder how are we going to receive its broadcast. You can check at http://www.lyngsat.com/tracker/sirius4.html

I have hear that you can already get SKY for free if you get a big dish. Anyone have details on this ?

Nah. Firstly SKY isn't free, you have to subscribe. Second, the satellite is over Europe and there is no African beam. The earth is in the way of the signal.
 
a 1.2 to 3m dish might be needed. and of course another decoder if you to keep your DSTV.
 
One day you'll have a load of antennas on your roof pointing in different directions, wonder what the lighting attraction will be
 
Sirius 4 will certainly be visible in SA. Don't forget these sats are geostationary over the equator. Depending on the transponders we're going to get a better signal than than PAS7/10 carrying DSTV at the moment. You'll certainly need a dish pointing in the right direction and a receiver and there a plenty of those out there not locked into DSTV.

Where can you find those decoders, as far as i know after that porn insident a few years back DSTV has started to lock their decoders only to receive the DSTV signal, and they have not yet come to an agreement with any of the new pay tv broadcasters on the decoder issue for the reason that MNET states they spent millions in developing the decoder why must they just open it now for their competitors, cause they will then not see any return on their investment and for competition purposes they will then loose subscribers due to the fact that the subscriber must only by a new smart card then and reposition his dish.......

ITS all about the money at the end of the day.
