Here are the latest HSDPA prices from Australia which are mentioned on the homepage of http://whirlpool.net.au. That 5G offer from Vodafone includes a free USB modem but stipulates a 24 month contract. While you are there take a look at the Eftel VDSL2 rollout plans at the bottom of the screen.

Optus has also launched a new wireless plan aimed at small business. It offers 2GB of data for $39.99/month, and includes a free modem on a 24 month contract.

But the big surprise is the new plan from Vodafone (not yet on its website), which offers a large 5GB of data for just $39/month. Vodafone has been relatively quiet in the mobile data space, but the telco says this plan is "the best value available in market". "This plan makes mobile broadband more affordable for many Australian customers and ends the traditional view that mobile broadband is the exclusive domain of business customers", said Vodafone's Tim Cowan.

Vodafone's plan compares well to 3, which offers only 2GB at the $40 price point. It also shows the terrible value of BigPond's NextG plans, which offer crippled speeds, much higher prices and lower data amounts. BigPond's only clear advantage seems to be the coverage, which is the envy of all other mobile operators.

I doubt it's really free. Just like here it will cost less if they make it available without a contract and the modem. Australia is also expensive so they probably get it at about the price of a 1GB bundle. Hope Vodacom is listening to this with their "priced competitively to the rest of the world" nonsense.
