8800 GT, Worth It, Heat Issues ?

Hia All

I am thinking of getting a 8800GT sometime in the near future seeing as I only got my BFG Tech 8800GTS 320 OC a little while ago, actualy just before the GT was released, and yes i know it kinda sucks, should have waited a bit.

Now are there any issues regarding the cooling on the GT? It just don't feel right using only one slot for cooling, now that I am used to the GTS's dual slot cooling.

And also wil there realy be a major difference between my current card and the GT ?

yup the gt kills the gts but i'll be honest if you only upgraded now, sell your gts which is not worth more than 1.7k now

use that money plus the money for the gt and buy a second hand gtx :)
 
I have had my gt for about 3 weeks now, and it kicks pixelated @ss!!!!! I have experienced no over heating nothing, and am running crysis every night. On idle my case temp sits on a comfortable 36 - 37 degrees, in extreme gaming it jumps to about 43-45 degrees
 
You might also want to consider the new 512MB 8800GTS (G92) which will be available from around mid-december in the R3500-R4000 range. But as with the 8800GT there might be stock issues. There is a review of this card at tweaktown.com somewhere.
 
Ok but i read somewhere that some of the guys gt's go up to 80-90 degrees under load.

What is the accepted heat for GPU like that?
 
I think that there might have been an issue with the nvidia drivers that didn't change the fan speed to 100% when the card is under load, but this can easily be overcome with rivatuner or other utilities that can manually set the fan speed.
 
I have the XFX 8800GT Extreme Edition. When I first installed it, my idle temp was 71C and under load (Crysis) it went up to 98C. I nearly shat myself.

So the following day I installed a Zalman VF-900Cu cooler onto it and things are now much better (57C idle; 88C under load; fan at about 50% -> 2000 rpm).

Be prepared to possibly fit an aftermarket cooler onto this thing. Or you'd have to bump up the fan speed on the stock cooler and make it sound like a Nationwide engine about to do a Perfect-10 dismount. :D
 
the overheating issue most people talk about only actually occur on factory oc versions of the 8800gt not the standardclocked version. the little fan is not sufficient for oc'ed speeds

That is what i don't understand, how can they manufacture this thing with the current cooling knowing that it get's that hot, and then it's up to you to purchase aftermarket products just to keep it from frying.

I am not very keen on dismantling a new GT to fit an aftermarket product, surely that would void the warranty ?

Nah, supplier told me if something breaks I should just put the old POS cooler back on and return it. As long as I don't crack the PCB, all is fine. :)

Depends what brand the card is. EVGA on their website states you can replace the cooler on their cards , you just have to put the old cooler back on when you need to return the card for whatever reason. As long as theirs no smoke or fire they will replace your card.

Personally waiting for the next super card to replace the ultra/gtx before upgrading my 640mb 8800 gts. Probably sometime next year.
 
the 8800gts 320mb came to the end of it's life long before it was supposed to. so i'm getting 2 gt's because the performance gains are huge

I've been running my 8800GT for a few days now, no overheating issues (even when playing Crysis and Call of Duty 4 at full details) and it's FAST! :eek:

Go for it :)
 
as far as i know, XFX cards have GREAT warranty's, lifetime, and if you sell it to somebody, the warranty moves to that person too. (note : warranty works if you register your card)

Not too sure of that warranty applies to South Africa, though... I hope it does :D
