PC Upgrade HELP...

Ok so I had decided to hold off my upgrade till 2008, but my PC had other plans & died on me last night. :mad:

I'm going to keep my tower, toss the motherboard, chip, graphics card & RAM.

What I'd like to know from you guys is what should I look for in a upgrade, especially if I plan on doing alot of gaming (Crysis). I know in my past thread guys were talking about the 8800 GTS card along with 2-4GB's of RAM, does that still stand for now or can I go higher with RAM?

I'm going to get most of my stuff from PC Zone in Pinetown (Durbs) & would be gratefull if you guys could recommend a board, chip, card & RAM please? I have a budget of around 9k.

Get a P35 based motherboard (R1200 - R2500)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 +- R2500
2 Gigs of DDR2 800 RAM +- R1000 per 2GB set
Geforce 8800GT 512MB +- R2500 (But you might have to shop around to find stock)

You could go for 4 gigs of RAM if you a 64-bit OS

Hiya thanks for the info! I appreciate the prices too. I have the card lined up. I'm just not sure what board & chip to get.

Dumb question, but would running a 65-bit Operating System cause more probs for certain games?
 
I'm not sure of the problems with 64-bit but I think that some software is not compatible and drivers are sometimes an issue as well.

You might need to think of upgrading your current power supply as well, depending on what you have at the moment.

I have a 400w PS right now, was told to go higher if I intend running more fans.

Is it just me or does upgrading suck? :confused:
 
yes - upgrading does suck - generally end up forking out for new everything.

Don't stress about the RAM, 2Gig should do you fine....

For PSU - 400W prolly a bit min, depending of GPU and CPU

Sweet thanks so much for the info! What really bites is give or take a few mins all this would be pretty much crap compared to whats out, let alone cheaper...

Makes me wish I had a Xbox! :D
 
With your R9000 budget you should have about R1000 left to spend on the PSU for which you can get a really decent one. Coolermaster has some nice 500-600Watt models for between R500-R700.

If you have a generic 400watt PSU upgrading it is probably a good option.
 
Y2K, youre making no mistake by going to PCzone. Sometimes their prices are insanely cheaper then some of the suppliers even...

Look for bundles too! (they also give massive discounts if you pay cash - im sure you know this :) )

there is no real difference between the frame rates in the 8800GTS and the 8800GT.

i'd buy the 8800GT
2gigs' of Ram
and 2x 250.gig harddrive space for just incase maybe one Scuzzi drive at 12000 rpm 150 or so for windows and games.

and if you can also try to get Windows vista wehn their first service pack comes out in JAN. Windows vista boost performance on hardware by up to 45%

64 bit OS would only be a problem if you are running old hardware or software if every thing you use is new then you should have drivers and software.

I switched over to vista x64 this last week and 99% of my software is fine and 100% of my hardware has drivers.

The only program I have an issue with is aquamark and coretemp( since it doesn't have a signed driver).
 
i run 64 bit vista and it works well better than the 32 bit

you need to take out more time to refine it :)

raz you loaded it up yet or you still being lazy :)

Thanks for the breakdown. I just phoned a mate of mine @ PC Zone & got a quote for 7k for the bang lot.

I was just wondering with reguards to fans, ideally how many should I have on my pc. My tower at the moment comes with 2 fans & I know my PS has a massive one, should I look at getting 2 more? :confused:

try getting the aerocool zero degree :)

huge ass fan 25cm of pure fan enjoyment :) and its silent and move alot of air
 
yea but thats inside the box, the 25cm on the aerocool is outside and blow loads of air so whateva is cooling cpu/vga is getting alot of cool air
