Hi all,

Friend wants a new PC excluding monitor and keyboard/mouse. He has R6000 to spend. I'll get the parts from Rectron for him.

What do you think?

That's good to know.

About that graphics card, Rectron don't stock it. We'd prefer to get everything there. How would this Radeon, for about R1700, compare to the 8600GT?:

If we got this card, how much would we be losing out when compared to the HD3850?

Yep, just get everything from rectron and order the card from prophecy.co.za, no shipping charge.

You'd be losing out a lot if you went with a 8600GT or 2600XT, very bad decision.

I'd perhaps look at getting a 320GB HDD rather, since last time I checked, R/GB, the 320 worked out cheaper than the 250, and there isn't that big of a price difference, IIRC...

Otherwise, yeah, looks good, and if you really want to get the gfx card from Rectron, just use the on-board until they get them in stock, cos i'd also recommend rather going for the 3850.
 
onboard is not far off those crappy 8600 2400 and 2600's piece of rubbish crap BS how could release cards like that

Yea, i've also received this recommendation. I went to look for comparitive reviews [i.e 8600GT vs. Gecube 3850] and the ATi blows this particular Nvidia out of the water it's scary.

Priced at just $180 US the Radeon HD 3850 is a serious bargain and it is really the only viable alternative for gamers looking at spending $200 US or less on a graphics card. The GeForce 8600 GTS was found to be almost 50% slower on average when compared to the Radeon HD 3850 in the nine games that we tested. Given that the Radeon HD 3850 only costs 20% more at the most, there is no reason to purchase the GeForce 8600 GTS over a Radeon HD 3850 graphics card. While the Radeon HD 3850 did destroy the GeForce 8600 GTS, it also achieved something even more impressive in the process.

not really for an extra 1k you could have bought a 8800gts at the time which is way better

also the 3850 which is less than 2k whips that card something bad

Which is why I am reaaaaaaaally pissed off with Nvidia...
I pent R2K on a card thinking I've got something way above average, just to find out in some games it gets the same FPS as the high end 7 series card...

Don't be pissed off with NVidia. Be pissed off at the person who told you that the 8600GT is "way above average". A bit of research on the internet would have revealed that it isn't "way above average".
