I saw this documentary yesterday
I would love a job like this, these guys work about 4 hours a day every now and again. Best is they earn up to $ 100 000 for maintenace on Oil riggs
What do you guys think, sounds bloody amazing

Very dangerous work.
You can't just pop up and down, you have to compress and decompress properly, otherwise you'll get the bends.
Plus it's a whole different set of circumstances down there.
not to mention stuff like cramp from the cold
shriveled willy from the water  :p
And sharks..
and any number of other dangers

Very dangerous work.
Appart from the normal Diving hazards, could it get any more dangerous ?
I think one could make a killing if you get qualified to do this specialized job. And the jobs are all over the world. Appart from the very good salary, I think this is one job a person would love to do every day

And no MyADSL postwhoring either :p :D

Think about it.
Only you the ocean and your job.
No one looking over your shoulder, no monthly stats, no peak hour traffic...
/sigh.

It's extremely dangerous, it's not like normal diving at all. Diamond divers on the coasts of our country are at the same if not worse levels of risk.
I know a lady (one of my mom's friends) who's son was a diamond diver and the current misplaced some boulders in the ocean, he died on the spot, he was only in his 20's.
You gotta be ready and you gotta work hard. ;)

I don't know but it looks like these guys (Welders) mainly work in the Harbours. But yea, nature is very very unpredictable

What you would like is not the normal harbour welding jobs :D still all the traffic getting to work etc.
Welding on oil rigs under water or above pay well any way you look at it :D Welding 100m below the water surface in almost pitch black cold waters aint my idea of a relaxing job :D

Anyone know someone or somebody I can speak to about this ?
Thinking of making a career change :)

Pls guys I would appreciate some help

Um... I'm stumped. I know a lot of people, but on this one I can't even point you in a general vague direction...
This does sound amazing. A colleague of mine's son does this and earns US$20k a month.

The job seems damn interresting, fixing boats, underwater pipelines and what not, only allowed 3 hour straight dive in a 24 hour time frame. So you have a 3 hour working day with awesome pay :D

I want in
But it's also listed as one of the most dangerous jobs. Think it has to do with deep dives, being caught or trapped underwater and what not. But it really does sound damn awesome.

Wow... Its a complete 180 switch from programming where we have to do 24 hrs work in a 3hour timeframe. :D
But it REALLY sounds awesome. And when you get hungry...torch a fish. (Fish are friends, not food) ... or some seaweat (sea WEED)

there is a company called Dormac, they are involved with ship repairs here in South Africa and that generally involves a lot of welding and you can be pretty sure that being connected to ships there should be an element of water involved :D
edit: check their website out, and try and find the calender, its worth it :) www.dormac.net

Considering your apparent memory loss (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=96332) one would wonder if this is the best career choice for you?

From what I can tell by knowing you from the forum this job is right up your alley - real 'hard man' stuff ;)
A mate of mines dad did this for the Royal Navy - dude had some amazing stories and retired with a Rolex from The Queen!
EDIT: seriously risky job though!

When I was in high school i wanted to do this. You dive very deep and use tanks filled with a helium mix. Rip currents, hypothermia, nitrogen narcosis, the bends, giant squids, these are not ways in which I plan to die... I know how I want to die.. and that's by accidentally falling into a large vat of molten chocolate and drowning in that... when they pull me out, they are meant to just leave me encased in the chocolate and put me in a cool place...

I knew a couple of these divers and the lifespan of such a diver is not very long. You can only do it for a couple of years.

i have also heard something nasty about deep water dives, apparantly you have to have special teeth fillings put in because there are sometimes air pockets under your fillings and these have nasty conseqences when coming back up, like popping out!

YEs, it is a cool job, have a look at the dive tables, 3 hours working at a 100m, 6-8 hours busy decompressing, thus 9-11 hours hanging around in the water at various depths, just waiting, or if a decompression chamber is available, 9-11 hours in the chamber, decompressing.

I want to seriously do this job. But from what I could gather last night searching.
1. you need to be a qualified Welder (No idea how long that process takes)
2. Once you are a qualified Welder then you need to do the various diving courses to certify you as an underwater welder. (No idea how long that takes)
So I guess one will need atleast 2 years of training if not more to be qualified for doing this kind of job :(

100m is flippen deep!!!!!
Looking out over the bay from my office window here, I dont think I would want to be 100m under that water at all.
What if everyone on the ship decides to leave and forget about you down there?
What was that movie many years ago about free diving (without tanks), was pretty cool - something you can get addicted to, guy eventually thought he was a fish and decided not to surface.
Think about that, what if you suddenly think you're a fish?

My cousins done this type of work and diamond diving etc / salvage amongst other things , but he's now studying to be a yacht technician and a diesel mechanic as its not as fun being in the water all the time as you would think - rough and dangerous work.
